'The Vampire Diaries' - 'Blood Brothers' Recap

The Vampire Diaries, Paul Wesley, Blood Brothers
(S01E20) "You're back on Bambi blood, and I'm a badass big brother again. All is right in the world." - Damon to Stefan

A jealous brother, an evil uncle, and a trusting girlfriend all played into this episode of 'The Vampire Diaries.' We also got some flashbacks that revealed more of the Salvatore brothers' backstory and why Damon hates Stefan so much. Although, really, if he hated him that much, he wouldn't have organized the rescue mission to extract Stefan out of the vampires' farmhouse lair. Maybe he did it more for Elena than anything else.

And is it just me, or are Damon and Elena getting awfully chummy lately? I'll answer my own question: yes, they are.

Thinking back to the promos when 'The Vampire Diaries' premiered last fall, it sounded like the story would be about a girl caught between two vampire brothers. There really hasn't been that much of that until now -- unless you count the backstory of Katherine, which I don't -- but maybe we're headed towards some kind of showdown.

For one thing, as mentioned, Damon and Elena are getting chummier by the minute. Last week, he plopped down in her bed to gab about Stefan. This week, he plopped down next to her on the couch and put her feet in his lap. He also jokingly called her "a complete nuisance." These are not the actions of some distant acquaintance.

But Elena is so hooked on Stefan she can't see straight. She puts herself in harm's way (going into the basement cell and asking Stefan to go upstairs and talk) because she trusts that he won't go all rabid on her. In some ways, Elena is the most down to earth person around, but sometimes I wonder if she's hurting so much from her parents' death and lies about her parentage, that she'll just trust whomever she gets close to, even a vampire who could turn on her at a moment's notice.

A bit of storyline sussing: So we know that Katherine turned both Damon and Stefan (which made Damon eternally jealous -- talk about holding a grudge). Katherine was then carted off to the church and sealed in the tomb. But a few weeks earlier, she had Emily make the ring for Stefan. Damon felt like he killed Katherine, and thus wanted to die himself, but Stefan forced him to drink that girl's blood and bring him back to life. And -- ewww -- gross scene where Stefan drank his dying father's blood, which made him feel righteously powerful. This family's got some serious issues.

I called Frederick's death wrong a few weeks ago, so I'm hesitant to say that Pearl is dead. But it certainly looks like Johnathan killed her, doesn't it? Pearl and Anna seem like noble vampires. And I love the pairing of Anna and Jeremy. He may have wanted to be turned to be with Vicki, but I'm guessing now he'll want it to be with Anna.

A Few Quotes:

"Is that a problem?" - Elena to Damon, on staying at Salvatore's for the night
"Yes, you're a complete nuisance." - Damon

"Why would you want to go to high school? It blows." - Jeremy
"Do you really have to ask?" - Anna

"I would say drop dead, but ... " - Elena to Damon

"What do you think your mother would say if she knew you were dating a vampire?" - Johnathan
"Which mother?" - Elena

"I don't want to survive. I'm sorry, Elena. No more. After what I've done, it has to end. I just want it over." - Stefan

"Short-term rentals and hotels are a bit of a gray area. You kind of have to play it by ear." - Damon to Alaric, on whether he can enter a building or not

"Let's not kill anyone tonight. Your words. Just pointin' that out." - Damon to Alaric, after they kill Henry

"My sons. They will be remembered as the innocent victims of the battle of Willow Creek." - Mr. Salvatore to Mr. Gilbert in a flashback

"Jonathan Gilbert hated you. His only regret was that he didn't drive a stake through your heart himself." - Johnathan to Pearl

"I just don't want to waste any more of my life searching for answers I don't want. I'm through with Isobel. I'm done with all of this." - Alaric to Damon

"How was the errand?" - Elena
"Futile, although I think I witnessed a teacher having an existential crisis." - Damon

"Don't fight it. We can do this together." - Stefan to Damon, on becoming vampires

"I hated you, and I still do. Not because you forced me to turn, but because she turned you. It was supposed to be me, Stefan. Just me." - Damon

Question of the Week: Do we know what the mysterious invention is that Pearl gave to Damon? Is it a vampire detector?

I think I am the only one who digs the Elena and Damon as just friends. Stefan and Elena makes sense to me and having Damon into the fold is a treat. I do see the chemistry but to me its more of a brother and sister vibe. Oh, well...I guess I am just weird!

I love Damon and Alaric together.

"You tried to kill me!"

Damon & Elena are defintely moving closer together, which I am all for. She needs to realize Damon's superior qualities. Stefan is a whiner and not the "goody-2-shoes"he appeared to be. Damon loves his brother. He put his life on the line extracting Stefan from the Vampire farmhouse lair. Damon is extremely loyal. The witch told Stefan he was pure of heart and that was his curse. Damon also feels guilt, which means he has a heart & soul too. Damon loves to tease Elena and she knows it. My favorite lines: Elena: "What is Stefan's favorite food" Damon: Fluffy puppies, Golden Retrievers with floppy ears. He knew that would annoy her. Just like telling her she was a complete nuisance. They are cute together. I hope Pearl is not dead, but it did not look good for her. Poor Anna! Absolutely love the Alaric & Damon "Kick-Ass" Team. Vampire Diaries is one of the BEST SHOWS on TV. Lots of twists & turns.
