'The Big Bang Theory' - 'The Spaghetti Catalyst' Recap

by Brad Trechak, posted May 3rd 2010 10:32PM
The Big Bang Theory(S03E20) So now we have our first post-relationship episode between Leonard and Penny and, as anticipated, things are awkward. While it was unquestionable that the relationship would not last and that the duo was simply not meant for each other, there is still the issue of them still living across the hall in the same building.

The episode felt somewhat low-key, particularly after three weeks of no 'BBT.' Obviously, after the break-up in the last episode (which can be subtitled 'Wil Wheaton Is Evil'), there is nowhere to go between Leonard and Penny but up.

I do wonder if Sheldon's attempts at a dual dinner was a subtle method of getting Penny and Leonard back together. While Mr. Cooper usually displays incredible ignorance with regards to relationships, it's easy to forget that he is a genius and it wouldn't surprise me if this was his master plan. Penny and Leonard are cute in the "divorced couple with a child" roles they adopted at the episode's end.

Other thoughts:
  • Some things remain consistent. Sheldon can't tell a realistic lie to save his life. Other people would have been able to lose Wolowitz before they even went down the stairs.
  • Did anybody else find nerd irony with the fact that Sheldon was wearing a Star Sapphire shirt and that he was possibly trying to get Penny and Leonard back together and that, in the comics, the Star Sapphires wield the power of love? Or perhaps that's just me noticing comic book related irony.

With the focus on Penny, Sheldon and Leonard tonight, Wolowitz and Raj didn't really have that much to do. They did get some good lines tonight, though. The entire episode was packed with "bazingers." I guess the break for three weeks helped the writers recharge their batteries. Or maybe I was just starved for some 'Big Bang Theory' and would have laughed at anything.

Here's a list of some of the best lines of the episode (please forgive if they're not verbatim). Feel free to mention in the comments any that were missed:

Sheldon (to Penny): "It was a lot of work to accommodate you in my life. I'd hate to think that effort to be in vain."

Penny: "You're just coitusing with me, aren't you?"

Sheldon (on Italian food): "That's what the Romans made Jesus eat."

Sheldon (after mentioning the memory-wiping device from 'Men In Black'): "I'd like to erase Ben Affleck as Daredevil."
Wolowitz: "So does Ben Affleck."

Not a quote, but the "L" shape that Sheldon made on his forehead when mentioning he was on "Team Leonard" was hilarious.

Wolowitz: "Jews don't have Hell. We have acid reflux."

Sheldon (after getting heartburn): "Oh Lord. I'm in Jewish Hell."

Raj (on a porn site): "Do you think this is really Henry Clinton doing it with Oprah?"

Sheldon: "Sometimes your lack of social skills astonishes me."

Sheldon: "Allegiance to male comrades before women who sell their bodies for money."

Raj: "Does the elastic woman in 'The Incredibles' use birth control or can she actually be a diaphragm?"

I love when Sheldon says he’s glad that he and Penny are still friends because “It was a lot of work to accommodate you in my life; I’d hate for it to be in vain.” Oh my I love the beginning of this episode. Although I didn’t have many outburst reactions of laughter until the end it was quite humorous. Blockbuster was my first choice in the past and I used them for many years until I started using Netflix but when they raised my price I started using Blockbuster when I got my free mail membership and now I’m all for Blockbuster. I got it free with my new DISH Network employee account but it’s free for anyone. http://bit.ly/jYtohY

to whoever said the show was getting less funnier, i disagree. This was a pretty solid and funny episode. Sheldon was just hilarious with all his lies, and when he got chased by that dog and came back to Penny with that single hot dog and all battered and out of breath, "I had to trade the rest of the hot dogs for my life!" Like with most tv shows, half hour of comedy, theres always good episode and not so good episodes.

Irony: the use of words to express something other than and especially the opposite of the literal meaning (m-w.com)

That wasn't irony. That was the exact opposite of irony. Foreshadowing would be a more accurate description. Also, the plural of 'bazinga' would most likely be 'bazingas,' not 'bazingers.'

maybe a deliberate mistake by the writers.

if raj was watching what i think he was watching then the scene would involve Hilary Clinton and Condoleezza Rice not oprah.

P.S. i know this comment makes me look like a perv

This show just keeps getting less and less funny each episode.

I love how both Penny and Leonard were behaving like the parents of Sheldon and arguing over who would take him shopping for bedsheets and shoes. That sort of made Sheldon even more endearing to the audience to see that he needs to be taken care of like a little kid.

Line of the night by Penny, "You're just coitusing with me, aren't you?" I think next to Bazinga it's my new favorite phrase.

I liked the episode. I think it shows growth in Sheldon's social skills. The break-up episode was the first time I really believed Penny-Leonard as a couple, and I thought it was totally unfair for Penny to ask Leonard if they could be friends this soon... it can't be that easy, Leonard's still in love, so I hope they address that instead of glossing over it the rest of the season.

Sorry about that. I must have misheard the line (I had "Henry" in my notes). Hillary Clinton makes more sense in the context.
