'America's Next Top Model' - 'Hobbits vs. Models' Recap
(S14E09) Oh Mylanta, 'America's Next Top Model' really needs to tell Reina that quoting 'Full House' isn't funny. The five contestants continue to bitch about each other while trying to take photos. Reina, while a nice and sweet girl, comes off really fake when she's announcing how New Zealand is wonderful and amazing.Angelea slowly is being set up for failure. While she's talking big game, she hasn't delivered. Now her two friends in the house, Krista and Alexandra, have started to egg her on. To make it worst, it's that point where, after weeks of poor treatment, Angelea's hair is looking like a hot mess and she must have spent all her time waiting at the Port Authority in season 12 to not have time to catch any of 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy.
After watching Alasia knock on the elevator door, we're treated to more stupid model moments. Jessica decides to bake a hard shelled taco on top of the toaster. I've never even heard of cooking something on top of a toaster. Part of the taco fell into the toaster, caught on fire, and the girls ran like Sims in panic. Jessica splashes water and then tries to snuff out the fire with a towel. Somehow, the toaster is unplugged and the fire is quelled. After the taco incident, she deserved the dings about her parenting skills.
The challenge this week involved the idea of fitting into small places. The girls arrive at Hobbiton, the actual set where 'The Lord of the Rings' was shot. With Sarah McLeod -- the actor not the musician -- the girls posed in a circular door frame. The idea really wasn't anything new, but Alexandra tries a very men's magazine pose with her legs spread out. Harem pants can't display their shape correctly upside down. The other girls do a decent job, even though Jessica continued to look commercial. Krista manages to win again, bagging her $4,500 worth of clothes from World Fashions New Zealand.
Tyra gets behind the camera for a photo shoot. My problem with Tyra is that she runs a billion filters thorough her photos. Why can't she take a normal photo where the colors are vivid, like Nigel Barker last week? Either way, Tyra has another interesting concept involving the use of different patterned objects to create shadows on the faces of the models. Items include wicker chairs, doilies, tablecloths, netting, and a hammock. I'm not sure what the connection is, but Tyra also puts mud in the girl's hair. Krista and Alexandra do good jobs, but the other three struggle. Is it a compliment to be considered good looking when you look dead? Angelea manages softness only when Tyra straddles her. Reina doesn't feel the photo shoot and gives a sub-par performance. Jessica continues to look commercial. Andre Leon Talley is at a loss for words. He's not even screaming that the photo had "drekitude."
At the judging, McLeod joins the judges for deliberation. I'm not really sure if McLeod is much of a judge for photos, but one can say the same when Kim Kardashian or Lauren Conrad were guest judges. I still think that when there is no good guest judge (any designer from last week's go-sees would have sufficed) let's put either of the Jays on. Alexandra gets the big money-making phrase: she looked ethnic. Tyra has always loved the concept of multi-ethnic, but without the sepia filter, Alexandra would have looked Caucasian.
After the judges' deliberation, Tyra announces the best photo was Krista for the third time in a row. She is followed by Alexandra and Angelea. The bottom two are Jessica (sweet, but commercial) and Reina (romantic, but not edgy). Reina is safe for another week. She is reminded to love everything that she has to model. Tyra admits that being commercial on ANTM is the kiss of death. Thanks Tyra. While the photo montage scrolled past, Jessica's third, fifth and seventh photo all were jumping photos.
I'm worried about Krista because she's peaking a bit too early. It almost seems too unlikely that she will lose at this point. Several challenge wins and three top photos might prove bad if Krista doesn't get the love of CoverGirl or Seventeen. Next week is a double elimination, something started last season. I prefer having the double elimination because the episode isn't as frantic and most of the time the person who was in third place was far from the final two finalists. Who do you think will be in the final two? Leave your comments below.
