'Parks and Recreation' - 'Telethon' Recap

by Kona Gallagher, posted May 6th 2010 11:15PM
parks and recreationWell, I'm certainly thankful for the fact that the Diabetes telethon had CG titles, because I spent the first half of this episode thinking that everyone was talking about some basketball player ironically named "shrimp."

Instead, it was Detlef Schrempf, former Indiana Pacer who really did guest star on two episodes of the German soap opera, 'Gute Zeiten Schlechte Zeiten.' Fun fact: Tom Haverford was not making that up. Everything he said about Schrempf in the car ride was fact, word-for-word from his Wikipedia page.

So while that, coupled with "Diabetes: Let's Dia-Beat-This," were certainly two of the funnier parts of this episode, they were not my favorite. No, my favorite would have to be the beginning of the end of Anne and Mark. This has obviously been in the works for a while, as it was announced back in March that Paul Schneider, who plays Mark, is leaving the show. He's certainly not taking Anne with him, so an ending like this is inevitable. That doesn't make me any less happy that it finally happened though.

As much as I love Paul Schneider, Mark has been pretty much a non-entity this season. Back when he was the object of Leslie's affection, he had a good amount to do, but it always seemed as though the writers never really knew what they wanted to do with him and Anne. The dissolution of their relationship gives him a nice exit and frees up Anne for bigger and better things.

There aren't that many eligible men hanging around the Parks department, so I'm hoping that after Mark, Anne will just stay single and hang around Leslie for a while. Granted, both Adam Scott and Rob Lowe are going to be coming to Pawnee soon, so that probably won't last, but I'll be happy as long as we don't get some lame Anne/April fight over Andy. There is not a writer in the world who could convince me that Anne would actually go back to Andy, yet they've certainly hinted at that a few times during this season.

Some of my favorite things from this episode:

- April trying to make Andy jealous and Andy defending her honor
- "It's your life; get as many eagles as you want." - Leslie
- April covering her ears when Jerry played the piano
- Ron's mad furniture refurbishing skills
- Tom getting Detlef Schrempf's autograph for Wendy
- Ron's sleep fighting. "It's like underwater ballet!"
