'Grey's Anatomy' - 'How Insensitive' Recap

by Michael Pascua, posted May 7th 2010 8:15AM
Derek has to deal with being the Chief(S06E21) 'Grey's Anatomy' focused on the idea of sensitivity training this week. The main focus landed on an almost 700-pound man that basically quit on life, but Callie had to deal with a knee surgery, and Christina had a cardio patient's daughter to focus on. Cristina made the best jokes on the overweight man calling him "Fatty Fatty 2x4" and holding up the french fry and hamburger trying to figure out how he managed to impregnate his wife.

The viewers finally received a strong episode that managed to showcase the classic cast: Alex, Cristina, Meredith and Derek. By pushing Mark, Teddy, Arizona, Reed, Percy and April into the background, the show focused on the characters. The big exception comes from the fact that the show needs to know the difference between a simile and a metaphor. Using like or as is a simile, Cristina.

There was an irony of having the 700-pound man and his wife feeling uncomfortable after having the sensitivity training when he himself was cracking jokes. While I'm sure Alex had a very similar plot line before (Alex is sarcastic and not sensitive to a case, gets called out for being such, and then helps the patient in the end) he gets me every time for the ability to grow up. I didn't understand how Alex managed to stay on the case when Jackson, Cristina, Percy, and Lexie all got cut for one quick statement and Alex started a pool that Bailey joined in. She announced in the sensitivity training that one wasn't supposed to talk about the patient outside.

I can't wait until Derek steps down from being the Chief. He's not cut out for being the chief because he's falling under the two extremes: too insensitive (rejecting the idea of surgery on Mr. Corso) and being too emotional (sitting with his lawyer). I feel like the show made him the chief just to insure that there will be drama between him and Meredith because their love life is solid.

Sandra Oh shone tonight. Of all the episodes this season, the producers should use this episode for Emmy consideration for Sandra Oh. While I was afraid that the interaction between Cristina and the nine-year-old would become sappy, it was handled correctly and was touching. She made the right decisions and connected with the girl on her level. It was touching seeing how she would give up a cardio surgery because she connected with the girl. How she handled the news after Jackson gave the nod was perfect. On the relationship front, Christina should consider Jackson, he's equally witty, has a strong rapport with Meredith (her best friend), and is interested in cardio surgeries as well.

I'm upset with Owen ever since last week's episode throwing Teddy under the bus. Even if I don't care much for Teddy, even she didn't deserve that. While he has the right to be upset with Derek, I thought it was wrong of Owen to be upset with Meredith. She said nothing to him and he assumed by the look on her face that she knew. Cristina deserves so better than him and I hope he finally decides who he wants to date before the finale.

We've finally reached the endpoint of of the Callie/Arizona relationship. There was something very disturbing watching a really young girl flirting with Callie knowing that she was in a relationship. There was no real choice on where the relationship would go: Callie wanted babies, Arizona didn't. There wasn't any heavy drama like drinking, cheating, or diseases. You knew it wasn't gonna work, but the two will still care for each other and not have the awkward relationship silence like Mark/Lexie do. What disappointed me was that we didn't see Arizona the whole episode and the moment that we see her, she gets the bad news.

As for the small nuances, if we need to fill the void of not having Izzie or George, I've grown to like Lexie and Jackson fits right into the mentality of the original group. Speaking of Izzie, I dislike the fact that the writers are turning Izzie into the new Burke. You can't just undo years of having her in the hospital or donating money into Seattle Grace's clinic. I agree Sandra Oh was brilliant in this episode, but when isn't she? That's why she deserves the Emmy, she never has a weak episode. It's even hard to pick which episode she should submit to the awards. Just some weeks ago we were saying she totally should submit the one where Cristina tells Owen how she won't let any men change her, and now we are saying the same about this. That's the thing, she could send any episode, she is amazing in all of them!
The scenes with the little girl just break my heart.
It would be interesting to see Cristina and Jackson together, they have a lot in common, and maybe loosing Cristina for a while would make Owen realize she is 1000 times better than any other woman he has ever met.

I am so happy they had Arizona stick to her guns in not wanting children. Too often in TV and Movies the person who doesn't want children gives in eventually. As a child free person it is great to see us represented honestly and not as evil people.

Don't break up Callie and Arizona. They are the hot couple on that show. Though the storyline is good, theyshould be able to work it out.

Can someone explain what exactly the deal was with Owen and Teddy? Did Owen recommend that Teddy stays, or Teddy goes? Is what he told Christina (that he recommended she stay) different from what happened?

What I like to say is that Owen gave Derek backhanded compliments about Teddy (how she has good connections on the East Coast was a plus because she has connections, but a big minus since they are in the West Coast and her connections would probably be unwilling to fly across the US), but in general Christina wanted Teddy to stay, Owen didn't because he has mixed emotions about Teddy. Owen told Derek (in more words) to pick the other guy, and when he left the room Christina assumed he gave a good word for Teddy (especially when she got a contract).
