Julia Ling Talks About Her Return to 'Chuck'

by Allison Waldman, posted May 10th 2010 4:09PM
julia_ling_nbc_chuckOn Monday, May 10, 'Chuck' fans will get a pleasant surprise when one of the prettiest Nerd-Herders of all time, Anna Wu, returns to the Burbank Buy More to tie up some loose ends.

When last seen, Anna had taken a leap of faith and moved to Hawaii with Morgan so he could follow his dream of being a Benihana chef. When Morgan returned to California at the beginning of this season, Anna -- alas -- was not with him.

Actress Julia Ling spoke with TV Squad about her guest turn, and what Anna's got on her mind. She even shared her dream for a future film role with her idol. Who is her idol, you wonder? Well, let's just say he's someone who would make her day.

How is Anna returning to 'Chuck'?
Anna is coming back from Hawaii. She's got the whole sexy tan going. She's coming back for Morgan. She has some things to settle with him.

This is interesting, because supposedly Morgan dumped your character because she was cheating on him ... or is there more to it than that?
We're going to find out. There are some things that Anna is coming back to settle.

Is Anna ready to go back to work at the Buy More, ready to become a Nerd Herder again?

Anna could do that, but I don't think that's what's on her mind. She didn't come back for that. She's not thinking about Buy More. She's really back for Morgan.

How many episodes are you slated to do?
Just one for this season.

Did you pick up on any vibe about whether the show would be renewed for next season?
Everyone is very hopeful. It's been such a great season and they've got so much fan support. There have been so many amazing guest stars. So the feeling is very, very hopeful.

How did you originally come to be on 'Chuck'?
I think I just fit the profile of what they were looking for. I was an engineer and I studied really, really hard and I fix computers on the side. I understood the part. I auditioned for another part for the pilot. Then I got together with the writers to make up the wardrobe, and the stylist and we put it together and created this character.

What did you think when you saw Hannah, another Nerd Herd girl, on the show while you were gone?

She was actually really cute. I enjoyed watching Kristin Kreuk. It was like, she was filling in for Anna. It was like here's Hannah instead of Anna. That was kind of cool to me. I really enjoyed her performance. And she got to kiss Chuck.

Do you think you and Joshua Gomez, who plays Morgan, have chemistry?

I do. When we started it was like we connected. When I came back for this episode, it was like no time had passed. It was like we've never been apart. He's like family to me because we had so much fun together. Coming back to set was like one of the most amazing days.

In some past episodes, you got to do martial arts. Did that come easily to you?

I actually trained in martial arts, so when they asked me to train with the tripod -- to use as a weapon -- it was just like using a staff. It was a lot of fun. I didn't have to do martial arts in heels because Michael Strahan was so large that they thought it was funnier for me to be in flats and look even smaller. That made it easier for me.

Are you tempted to do more serious, dramatic work?

I love both. Doing 'Chuck' is like going to work and playing everyday. But I also worked on an episode of 'The Deep End' and that was a very dramatic piece for me. I played a character who was pregnant and my husband had been killed in war. It was so dramatically challenging. I found a big thrill in that. There was like another performer inside me. It was an opportunity to release these emotions.

If you had your choice, you'd do it all, comedy and drama?

Yes. My favorite thing is action, including fight scenes. I love martial arts sequences and I love dancing, anything that allows me to move. Drama, I love the challenge of it. Comedy is great because you're always laughing.

Who would you love to be making a movie with, who's your idol?
Clint Eastwood. He works so hard. I just watching 'The Changeling' and in 'Gran Torino,' he acted and directed and wrote the score. He's so talented. I would love to work with him as an actor or be directed by him.
