'Dancing with the Stars' - 'Performance #7' Recap

(S10E07) It's finally that time in 'Dancing with the Stars' where each of the contestants have to perform two full routines. Sadly, most of the contestants didn't have time to polish both performances leaving two average dances. The second of the dances continues last season's trend of adding a time period to the performances leading one contestant to get a 30.Along with the two rounds, the pros give unnecessary analysis of the celebrities and an old professional dance is performed with no real reason as to why they were invited other than to prove. Since we've gotten so close to the finale, I'm left wondering why the show got rid of the silly group dances that weren't scored. I would rather have watched the group dance than an episode of 'Romantically Challenged.'
Round One - Ballroom
Chad & Cheryl - Tango - Chad is either really loud or really quiet during practice which confuses Cheryl. As the couple began their dance, Chad's technique suffers from the tango's combination of quick and slow motions. Whenever the couple would do turns, Chad looked awkward because of their height difference. Chad would try his best to adjust his steps to match Cheryl's.
Len thought by having two dances, his tango lacked the polish. Bruno liked the emotional connection but it needed to be slicker in hold and step. Carrie Ann loved the growth, but his posture was wrong. Score: 21 (7,7,7).
Niecy & Louis - Viennese Waltz - Niecy tries to explain her schedule including her time at 'The Insider.' It's probably a bit of a sob story, since we get five seconds of practice video. Niecy does better with the Viennese Waltz than her Waltz a few weeks back, probably due to the lighter context of the dance. Luckily, she also danced lighter and almost glided across the floor. I thought the interesting floor spin at the end was a creative way of getting some height variation even though Niecy reminded me of a ShamWow.
Bruno thought it was pretty, but her arms swung too hard. Carrie Ann thought the body weight was causing odd push and pulls and her transitions need fixing. Len was pleasantly surprised by the good flow and posture. Score: 23 (7,8,8).
Erin & Maks - Argentine Tango - Erin and Maks squabble about the lifts because of Erin's nerves. The couple does a good job covering the floor and stage for the performance. The couple starts on stage with some strong leg work. Erin aces the leap into Maks with precision and had no fear. I'm surprised by her strong leg work because we don't see Erin have sharp leg movements. There's a funny juxtaposition from the final pose to the two smiling and giving high fives right as the performance ended.
Carrie Ann kisses Len and loved how hot the performance was. She commends her commitment. Len loved the performance. Bruno loved the extension that Erin had; she was on fire. Score: 28 (9,10,9).
Evan & Anna - Waltz - Evan teaches Anna how to ice skate. Ironically in practice, he comes off cold. As the couple starts off on the floor rolling around to create a storyline. I find it funny that Evan did the same spin that Erin did and he was the one being spun. While Evan's face doesn't show much passion, the technique was spot on throughout the performance.
Len felt indifferent, he didn't like the floor motions, but he had strong posture and movement. Bruno liked the romance of the story and his lyrical lines. Carrie Ann loved the lines, but he needs to loosen up and lose himself in the music. Score: 27 (9,9,9).
Nicole & Derek - Foxtrot - Nicole likes that she can throw ideas to Derek and he can bounce ideas off of each other. Unfortunately, Nicole stresses out easily and starts to cry yet again. The dance starts off cute with the bench. Nicole had a small stumble near the beginning. I personally wasn't a big fan of the over-done acting or the slightly Charleston inspired movements, but the hold sections were strong. I'm under the assumption that the end didn't have a lift, but rather an assisted jump.
Bruno thought it was dancing joy. Carrie Ann liked the smiling and how they challenged themselves in choreography. Len loved how the two created a love story; there was a bit of body contact issues. Score: 29 (10,9,10).
Musical Performance - Gary & Rita Gekhman's Futuristic Demonstration - I've actually seen this performance before and I don't understand why it was accepted badly. It shouldn't have been disqualified, it should have just been scored badly for not enough ballroom content. The sections that were actually in hold were sharp and their posture was strong. This dance does prove that the show could survive without a live band.
Round Two - Latin
Chad & Cheryl - '60s Jive - Chad gets a pimp outfit and tries to pimp out Cheryl. As the couple danced, Chad still comes off gawky because of his height and lacked any hip action. His flicks didn't look extended enough, especially when someone like Evan can really use his limbs. I didn't think there was enough jive in the performance, showing one of the flaws of adding a time period.
Len liked the energy and fun, but there wasn't many kicks. Bruno liked Chad's smile, but also thought there needed to be more kicks. Carrie Ann liked the concept and energy. Score: 24 (8,8,8).
Niecy & Louis - '90s Paso Doble - Niecy struggles with capturing the emotion of the Paso, so Louis tries to make sure that she's a '90s diva. I'm not sure why the designers love giving her yellow outfits though. While Niecy is a bit slow in the beginning, she continued to feel the song as the performances goes on. Her skirt work was strong and her connection with Louis was good.
Bruno thought she lacked control, the lines weren't there. Carrie Ann commends her for having an ambitious routine, but the beginning had too much bumping. Len thought that while she got through the routine, the dance didn't suit her. Score: 20 (7,6,7).
Erin & Maks - '80s Rumba - While the couple wants to look the part, Maks is convinced that there was no real change in rumba style. Erin feels awkward about her long arms. As the rumba begins, Erin works on some solo work on the stage making me wonder why they got rid of the "20 second solo" challenges. Erin's split work was a very nice touch and continued to show some fearlessness. Some of her movements weren't smooth enough for a rumba including jerky arm motions. A very interesting split sequence closes the performance.
Carrie Ann sees doubt, but reminds Erin that she moves beautifully. Len liked the hip action but some of Erin's movements jerked about. Bruno liked the performance, she continues to improve and deserves to be in the final. Score: 25 (8,8,9).
Evan & Anna - Futuristic Cha-Cha - The futuristic cha-cha allows Evan to be emotionless, even though his Wall-E voice was cute. Evan should have had the unfair advantage because he danced the cha-cha for the group performance, but the idea of robots negated it. I liked the robotic motions and Evan definitely benefit from not having to put emotion on his face. Anna looked amazing as she basically danced around Evan while he extended like a robot.
Len thought Evan lucked out because he got to be robotic. The futuristic segment was good, but the cha-cha wasn't fluid. Bruno loved the inventive futuristic cha-cha. Carrie Ann loved that he was committed to character and the stiff cha-cha worked well. Score: 26 (9,8,9).
Nicole & Derek - '50s Paso Doble - The two are worried and really confused by merging the paso with the 50s era, but the two lucked out getting a song that had no words. Whoever decided to do Nicole's hair must have been inspired by Beyonce in the 'Telephone' music video. Even with the '50s theme the two manage a strong paso. Nicole's leg gets caught in her skirt for a quick section but unlike previous weeks, she keeps going without any confusion on her face. On the whole, the performance was mostly paso with small 50s elements put in.
Bruno said mostly incoherent words but claimed Nicole was feisty and the dance was flavorful. Carrie Ann was mesmerized and sounded just like Bruno. Len saw nothing wrong about the performance either. Score: 30 (10,10,10).
Final Scores
Nicole & Derek - 59 (29 + 30)
Erin & Maks - 53 (28 + 25)
Evan & Anna - 53 (27 + 26)
Chad & Cheryl - 45 (21 + 24)
Niecy & Louis - 43 (23 + 20)
While Niecy is 16 points away from Nicole, I still think the scores are close enough to pull an upset. With Erin and Niecy being in the bottom two before one has to think that the two women have the smallest voting blocks. Big fans of Chad or Cheryl must be keeping them around. The big factor is where Pamela Anderson's voters will now vote. I would assume they would move from one good looking woman to another, most likely boosting Erin's votes.
On the dance front I'd like to see Chad eliminated with Evan in the bottom two to light a fire under him. Who do you think will be eliminated? Leave comments below.
