Why We Loved to Hate Her: The great state of Hawaii produced two famous figures in the last decade. One went on to become the President of the United States. The other was Jasmine Trias.

Whether or not you like Barack Obama's politics is one issue. But if there's one thing America should agree on, it's that Jasmine never should have made it as far as she did on 'American Idol' season 3.

In case you forgot: That was the same season that featured such great talent as Jennifer Hudson and La Toya London, both of whom Jasmine cruised past on her way to a third-place finish. For whatever inane reason, America had decided that the flower-wearing 18-year-old was the better singer, even after such disastrous performances as 'Breathe' and 'It's Raining Men.' Even worse: Jasmine wasn't even in the bottom 2 the week that La Toya was voted out. The other spot went to season 3's eventual winner, Fantasia Barrino. (For the record: Fantasia was also in the bottom 2 the week that J-Hud was eliminated. Yes, at two specific points, America thought that Jasmine was more worthy of the coveted 'Idol' crown than Fantasia.)

Luckily, the judges put America (not to mention Jasmine) in its place during Top 3 week, which featured a guest appearance from record mogul Clive Davis. While we can't actually prove it, when it was announced that Davis had selected Eric Carmen's 'All By Myself' for Jasmine's final song choice, it was all too clear that 'Idol' was trying to throw her under a bus.

Whatever the case, it worked: Jasmine's flower wilted, and she was sent packing all by her pitchy self. As was true each and every week, she ended 'Idol' on a very, very low note.

Though it took some time, the mistakes made during season 3 were corrected: Fantasia beat Diana DeGarmo in the finals, while Jennifer Hudson went on to win an Oscar and a Grammy.

Jasmine, meanwhile, released a self-titled CD in 2005. That disc sold just 14,000 copies -- proof that, even during bad times like season 3, hope will eventually prevail.
