Fox Cancels 'Wanda Sykes Show'
The annual network upfront presentations are just days away, which means not only are there a slew of new shows coming our way, but also some surprising cancellations, too. The latest cut: 'The Wanda Sykes Show' at Fox.Deadline.com reports that Fox is pulling the plug on the show after just one season. Sykes' talk show, which replaced 'MadTV' as the network's 'Saturday Night Live' counter-programming, premiered last November with strong ratings. But in the intervening months, the series has lost viewers and ratings are now below what they were for 'MadTV' in its final season.
UPDATE: The Live Feed has since confirmed Deadline's report.
As for what would fill the vacated Saturday-night timeslot, it may be another sketch comedy series. Fox has two pilots -- one written by and starring 'SNL' alum Dana Carvey and former Fox Saturday night talk show host Spike Feresten and another from Jamie Foxx and 'MadTV' creators Fax Behr and Adam Small -- that it developed for Friday or Saturday night primetime, but which may now land, according to Deadline.com, in the 11PM on Saturday spot.
Meanwhile, Sykes will has a presence in primetime. She stars as Barb, the best friend of Julia Louis-Dreyfus' titular character on CBS' sitcom 'The New Adventures of Old Christine,' and with Larry David and HBO confirming there will be an eighth season of 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' in 2011, perhaps Sykes will pop up again as herself, a friend of Larry's wife Cheryl and foil (like almost every other human) to Larry himself.
