Five Ideas for the Next Season of 'Chuck'
I say this as a big fan of 'Chuck': the show has jumped the shark. There are several reasons for this, but the big one is that once Chuck and Sarah got together there seemed nowhere else for the show to go.The show could create artificial barriers such as the Intersect malfunctioning or Morgan trying to become a spy, but in the end the show had two goals set in the first season: 1. Chuck's search for purpose in life and 2. Chuck's evolving relationship with Sarah. Both of these issues were resolved halfway through the third season before the six-episode extension. And now, it's been renewed for a fourth season.
Despite this negativity, I'm all for this renewal, if only to see how the writers essentially dig themselves out of the hole they're in. If 'Heroes' can get a five-year ride off an amazing first season (and subsequent crappy ones), then 'Chuck' is ahead of the curve.
With this in mind, I've thought of five storylines that would keep 'Chuck' interesting through a fourth and possibly fifth season. Keep in mind that, like you, I haven't seen all of the third season yet and some of these items may yet be addressed before it's over.
1. Have Ellie find out about Chuck's double life -- She's his sister and truthfully, she's already in the middle of all the insanity of Chuck's life, so the excuse of keeping her safe by not telling her doesn't really work at this point. This will likely be dealt with in season three, but the repercussions could go into next year.
2. Get rid of the Buy More -- Blow the place up. Castle is located right underneath, so it would make logical sense in the event of an attack by enemy agents. That part of the story has become worn out and it's becoming increasing difficult for Chuck to maintain a double life. Please note, I'm not saying to get rid of the actors. I think Jeffster! would be hilarious as C.I.A. tech support or janitors or some equivalent.
3. Sarah gets pregnant -- Here's something that Sarah never planned for in her life. She never thought about the "settling down" option of life. She never thought about life beyond her next assignment. Imagine a role-reversal of the first season in which Chuck is the physically capable one. Please note, I'm not mentioning a wedding because we already had one of those with Ellie and Awesome.
4. Someone close to Chuck should be killed as a result of Chuck's spy work -- Chuck has never dealt with that reality of the spy business. Sure, Emmett was killed in the beginning of this season, but Chuck wasn't really close to him and despite the shock of his death, the audience didn't empathize with him that much. The most logical choices are Morgan and Awesome. Awesome would be a more tragic and logical choice since he's a married doctor who, while admiring the spy game, doesn't really want to be involved with it. Apologies in advance to Ryan McPartlin.
5. Make Casey more human -- John Casey has always been more of a caricature than a person. He was created that way but it would be nice to see that he's grown for the better over time. He now knows he has an illegitimate daughter. I wouldn't mind the writers doing something with that.
So what sort of storylines do you think would help keep the show fresh?
