Regis Philbin Will Host Daytime Emmys

by Allison Waldman, posted May 17th 2010 6:15PM
If you want a host for the Daytime Emmy Awards who not only knows the business, but is a true living legend, you can't do any better than Regis Philbin. That's why the news today that Regis Philbin will be the host of the 37th Annual Daytime Emmys was such great news: Reege is daytime, don't you know?

He's the man. He's an Emmy winner for hosting 'Live With Regis and Kathie Lee' and for his work on 'Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.' Philbin has even acted on a pair of daytime soaps -- 'All My Children' and 'Ryan's Hope.'

The Daytime Emmys will be broadcast on CBS from the Las Vegas Hilton on Sunday, June 27, 9-11 PM ET. CBS may be the same network that has canceled two soaps in two years -- 'Guiding Light' in 2009 and 'As the World Turns' this year -- but it has stepped up to restore the luster of the Daytime Emmys after last year's show was relegated to cable. Booking Philbin is a classy move for CBS, especially since he's not a star on that network.

Philbin has recently had some health issues, including a hip replacement last year, but he's going to be fit and ready for the Emmys. In a statement, he said of the gig, "I am delighted to host the Daytime Emmys. It's going to be a great night with my daytime brothers and sisters, and I hope everyone wins an award this year."

"Regis Philbin is a TV icon," Daytime Emmys executive producer David McKenzie said in making the announcement.

Herb Granath, chairman of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, concurred. "We are ecstatic to have Regis Philbin. We were honored to award him the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008. His continual excellence in the broadcast television medium is a true inspiration to all of us in the industry."
