2010 Upfronts: CBS

by Audrey Fine, posted May 19th 2010 8:55AM
CBS surprised many TV insiders yesterday when it canceled seven series -- four dramas and three comedies.

Although many expected the Eye network's upcoming fall schedule to remain relatively unchanged, the axing of veteran dramas 'Cold Case,' 'Ghost Whisperer' and 'Numbers,' mid-season replacement 'Miami Medical' and sitcoms 'Accidentally On Purpose,' 'Gary Unmarried' and one-time hit 'New Adventures of Old Christine' freed up 5 1/2 hours on its time table.

So many open slots allowed the network to re-jigger it's schedule, most notably moving 'The Big Bang Theory' from its Monday-night berth to anchor Thursday night, followed by '$#*! My Dad Says.' Other notable changes include 'Survivor's' move to Wednesdays and 'CSI: Miami's' move to Sundays.

Filling the void on the drama front will be a remake of 'Hawaii Five-0' (Mondays at 10PM), a cop show called 'Blue Bloods' (Fridays at 10PM) and the legal-minded 'Defenders,' (Wednesdays at 10PM) starring Jim Belushi. For comic relief, the network is looking to 'Mike & Molly,' the new comedy from Chuck Lorre, set to air Mondays at 9:30PM.

Hawaii Five-OAnd while the news that Charlie Sheen (if he can stay out of jail) will pocket roughly $2 million per episode for the 8th and 9th seasons of 'Two and a Half Men' has been grabbing the lion's share of CBS-related headlines this week, other comedies like 'How I Met Your Mother' and 'Rules of Engagement' will also be returning to the lineup on Mondays. And, of course, the big ratings guns, including the 'CSI,' franchise, 'The Mentalist' and breakout hit 'Undercover Boss' will be back.

The untitled 'Criminal Minds' spinoff, starring Oscar winner Forest Whitaker, will debut at mid-season.

CBS revealed its fall lineup around 8:30AM ET, ahead of its upfront presentation, which is scheduled for this afternoon at New York City's Carnegie Hall.

FULL RUNDOWN:

Returning: 'How I Met Your Mother,' 'Rules of Engagement,' 'Two and a Half Men,' 'NCIS,' 'NCIS: Los Angeles,' 'The Good Wife,' 'Survivor,' 'Criminal Minds,' 'The Big Bang Theory,' 'CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,' 'The Mentalist,' 'Medium,' 'CSI: NY,' '60 Minutes,' 'The Amazing Race,' 'Undercover Boss,' 'CSI: Miami'

Canceled: 'Numb3rs,' 'Ghost Whisperer,' 'Cold Case,' 'Miami Medical,' 'New Adventures of Old Christine,' 'Accidentally on Purpose,' 'Gary Unmarried'

New: 'Hawaii Five-0,' 'Blue Bloods,' 'Defenders,' 'Mike & Molly,' '$#*! My Dad Says,' 'Criminal Minds' Spinoff (midseason)

NEW SHOWS:

$H*! My Dad Says'$#*! My Dad Says' - William Shatner stars in an adaptation of a Twitter page created by Maxim writer Justin Halpern to catalog the profane rantings of his 74-year old retired doctor dad.

'Hawaii Five-O' - 32 years after the original Jack Lord starrer aired on CBS, the show is back, this time with 'Three Rivers'' Alex O'Loughlin playing Steve McGarrett and 'Lost's' Daniel Dae Kim returning to Hawaii to play Chin Ho Kelly. Taryn Manning of '8 Mile' fame, rounds out the trifecta of island crime fighters. Jean Smart and Scott Caan co-star.

'Blue Bloods' - Tom Selleck returns to his 'Magnum P.I.'/'Jesse Stone' stomping grounds as one of New York's finest in this cop drama formerly known as 'Reagan's Law.' Donnie Wahlberg (the brother without the 'Entourage') co-stars.

'Defenders'
- Sitcom staple Jim Belushi and Jerry O'Connell star as a couple of feisty Las Vegas lawyers who will do just about anything to get their clients off the hook.

'MIke & Molly' - From comedy king Chuck Lorre ('Dharma & Greg,' 'Two and a Half Men') comes this sitcom about an overweight couple that struggles with food issues. Hilarity ensues.

'Criminal Minds' Spinoff - Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker stars as a "charming father figure" who will take the reins of a new group pf profilers on this as-yet-unnamed spinoff that was introduced in a two-hour episode of the original this past season.

NOTES:

As usual, this afternoon's CBS upfronts took place at NYC's venerable Carnegie Hall. President and CEO Les Moonves took to the stage first and talked about how the economy is recovering (really?), about how CBS has been number one for seven of the last eight years, about how more Americans watched 'NCIS' this season than saw 'Avatar' and about how he's really happy that he doesn't have to try and sell "One and a Half Men." (Ba-dum-dum.)

Next, Jo Ann Ross, the President of Network Sales did a riff on 'Undercover Boss' called 'Undercover Ross' and some polite yucks echoed around the room.

Dr. Sheldon Cooper (a.k.a. 'The Big Bang Theory''s Jim Parsons) was brought out to explain economics to us "lay people," and when William Shatner took to the stage, Sheldon was in Trekker heaven.

"I think I'm pretty f***ing funny, but what the f*** do I know?" Shatner said while discussing his role on '$#!* My Dad Says.' (The tagline, "This Fall, The Shat Hits the Fan" pretty much sums it up.)

Then it was Entertainment President Nina Tassler's turn to razzle dazzle 'em. Here's some of what we gleaned from her presentation:

"Leslie [Moonves] auditioned for 'Undercover Boss, but he was too stiff," she quipped.

"Defenders' is as much a bromance as it is a legal drama."

"The thrilling reboot of 'Hawaii Five-0' is ridiculously sexy."

At least they were smart enough to leave Tuesdays alone.

Hawaii Five O isn't going to make it simply because Alex O Loughlin is in it. he is the kiss of death to any show he is in now days.

THE DEFENDERS, HAWAII FIVE-0, $#! MY DAD SAYS will be canceled by this time next year. All three CSI shows may very well end next year.

Too many law shows this year. Defenders sounds like the worst one.
James Belushi and Jerry O'Connell in a show together. Really CBS?

I'm pretty certain Hawaii Five-O ran from 1968 to 1980, which makes it 30 years since its original run, not 22.

The Criminal Minds spinoff was not introduced in a two-hour episode, just a regular one.

Seriously, does AOL employ a single proofreader or fact checker?

Whoa, who'd have thought the CBS upfronts were ever going to be the most interesting of the big four? I like that they're getting rid of a lot of dead weight (they could drop off some more though...). The new crop doesn't appeal to me either. It's great to hear that Shatner has a new job and I hope the Hawaii Five-O revamp is a success just for Daniel Dae Kim's sake. Out of all the big networks' new shows - and whew, some do sound really promising! - CBS' sound like the least original and interesting. Surprise, surprise! I can't even pick one in particular that I feel that I HAVE to try.

Who am I kidding. I just know we're going to check out a lot of these new dramas just for the sake of it - who knows there's a gem in there!

Excuse me, sacrilegious.

I'm going to miss Cold Case.

Moving Survivor (after 20 seasons) to Wednesdays? That's sacriligious!

Moving 'BBT' to Thursdays is not a great idea. How many times have sitcoms failed when moved to another night to anchor a new show. What happens if/when this new sitcom fails?

I think CBS has just created the new "NBC-like Thursday" line-up we used to love in the late 90s early 2000s, with one hit comedy leading the way and two high-rating dramas following "$#*! My Dad Says" I think they have a winning combination there. Smart move!!
