'Grey's Anatomy' - 'Sanctuary' Recap

by Michael Pascua, posted May 21st 2010 8:33AM
Mandy Moore guest stars on Grey's Anatomy(S06E23) I wonder who the smart person that thought "After the Katherine Heigl incident, there are too many characters on 'Grey's Anatomy.'" and suggested the idea of a shooter to slim down the convoluted number of characters. Couldn't several doctors just have moved, quit, or faded into the background? For the main plotline, the show obviously forced all the right characters to be stuck together during lock down for maximum drama.

Hour one of the finale focused mostly on the rampage of the of the killer. Our first victim being the squeaky Reed. At least we got to see little pieces of brain next to her and watch April trip and fall on her. Alex must have been the most unlucky guy to pick the least busy elevator ever.

There were three couples that were merged for plotline purposes. Mark and Lexie were forced together to take care of Alex. If anyone says that the show has jumped the shark to be overly dramatic, they have evidence: now with Alex shot, all of the original five interns have been under the Seattle Grace knife. Mark got over the fact that he loved Lexie to get focused on repairing Alex.

Owen is stuck dealing with Teddy, while shunning Cristina in the process. I traditionally have trouble with Kim Raver, but the minimum amount of her in both hours made her bearable. Callie and Arizona are stuck in the pediatrics ward. While Callie had some creative ideas of bringing all of the children together, the stress between the two was a bit obvious. If the episode was normal, the appendix girl would have been the main focus trying to somehow bring Callie and Arizona together.

I don't exactly understand why Mr. Clark picked a random room that had Bailey, Charles, and Mary (played by Mandy Moore) in it; obviously it's plot help. While Mandy Moore's chipper attitude was quickly transformed into fear, it was an interesting turn. I'm reminded that Mandy Moore is a decent actress when she's given good roles. Watching her being pulled from under the bed was pulled right out of a horror film, but I thought it was way too convenient that Percy fumbled a bedpan. It had to be painful watching Bailey lie about being a nurse to save herself, but she took the information that Percy said and realized he was mainly going for surgeons.

It takes Cristina to not pay attention to rules. Meredith and Cristina manage to wander the hospital and not get shot. It had to be painful for Cristina getting pushed and slammed into a cart of supplies. The big standoff ended with Derek getting shot by Mr. Clark. Why couldn't he manage to shoot April as well? The only Mercy Wester that has gotten any dimension was Jackson Avery anyway.

As for the minor notes, I'm still disappointed how the killer was magically focusing on the main cast. Sure there were extra nurses, security guards, and patients but clearly having Reed, Percy, Alex, and Derek getting shot is some bad statistic. There is an amazing irony watching a shooter gun down Seattle Grace quickly followed by the Kia commercial singing "How You Like Me Now?" The best little Easter egg of the show? Dr. Webber had his coffee at Rhimes Cafe. Could you have survived if the show split the last two episodes into two different weeks? Leave your comments below.

I'm sure that you pride yourself on being snarky and having 'honest' reviews but no, just stop while you're ahead. Besides the fact that I'm a die-hard Grey's fan, this review was not okay with me. Reed, yes a little annoying, but there's no justification for what happened to her. That image of her being shot is haunting. It was pure evidence of genius writing by Rhimes. By killing her point blank the beginning, it really led the audience members to believe that anything could happen. And it did.
And please! The 'obvious plot help'? Uhh duh! It is a television show after all. It's sort of written with a purpose-to entertain. The shooter isn't just going to choose random rooms full of people that the audience isn't emotionally invested in. What would the point of that be?
Suspend your disbelief and enjoy an excellent example of a season finale.
kthnx.

Grey's Anatomy took the suspense and shock of three seasons of 24 and rolled it into 2 hours of excellent TV. Great performances all around, great writing, and I was glad they wrapped up practically all of the seasons various plot points by the end of it.

Meanwhile, I agree with the consensus here - the review was flat-out shoddy. It didn't do the show or the finale justice.

I've never complained about a review here, but I have to side with the masses. That was really sub-par.

As for the episode, I thought it was riveting. I agree with all of the other posters that the police response was ridiculous, but that's what willing suspension of disbelief is for. But I thought the episode was some of the most compelling television I've seen in quite some time.

When Clark shot Reed it was a cue to the audience--anything can happen. Boom! You're dead. No warning. Coming into the ep, I knew there was no way that characters like Meredith, Christina, Alex, and Derek would be killed, but as I watched, I really thought "All bets are off." I actually thought Derek had died when his eyes closed. There was some great writing last night.

I thought the performances were stellar. Like most viewers, I haven't exactly warmed up to the Mercy West characters. But Charles's death just killed me. I don't really care about the character, but watching their performances, especially Chandra Wilson's, just about undid me.

I was also impressed that they didn't end with any cheesy cliff-hangers. Things were fairly well resolved by the time the second hour ended. I feel more enthusiastic about this show than I have for quite some time.

Why is this reviewer still writing for TV Squad?

He never gets the point of anything. And misses ridiculous details - like not noticing the difference between Mandy Moore's character and Miranda Bailey.. could they look less alike?

Not the greatest, nor detailed review of one of the best episodes the show has ever had. Seems like kind of a rush job by someone who isn't even a fan of the show.

Sloppy show, sloppy review? You give what you get.

The only thing this episode proved: the show has gone to hell, Bailey is the only character who I care anything about, and Mandy Moore really sucks.

I have to agree with almost everyone else that's commented. Excellent episode, not-so-excellent review.

For an episode that literally made my heart race it is a pretty rough review. Reed got hers because she was snotty and that would have been Christina's fate if it had been any other day (if she was being her usual snippy self) I held my breath as Bailey was being pulled from under the bed then I finally got to breath again when she was smart enough to say she was a nurse. I'm not a fan of the Mercy West female doctor but it took brains to reveal her life to the shooter which saved her life. Yes there was some really overlooked facts about the hospita security but with TV I can handle them taking a little liberty.

Isn't it odd that we see someone shot in the head, fall to the floor, and bleed out, but when Meredith has to ralph in a wastebasket, the camera cuts away?

Seeing someone get shot in the head doesn't instantly cause you to get shot in the head. For some reason, that isn't true with vomiting.

Characters have been shown vomiting on a fair number of shows, and I don't recall any mass outbreaks. I suspect it has to do with story needs and the actor's willingness to tolerate the preparations for the effect.
