'The Mentalist' - 'Red Sky in the Morning' Recap (Season Finale)

by Isabelle Carreau, posted May 21st 2010 2:05AM
The Mentalist(S02E23) "I'm becoming what I was supposed to be. Your children's children will worship me." - Red John

Technically, Red John did not say that quote but he could very well have. Red John is twisted enough to believe he'll one day be worshiped for his killings. He can add one potential fan to his list as one important character claimed that Red John could redeem himself!

I say "he" when speaking of Red John, but it could very well be a woman, no? And based on the new tidbits we got about Red John this week, I'm still not 100 percent sure RJ is a man. You?

At the end of the episode, when Red John first speaks to Patrick Jane, RJ's voice is in a pitch that could be a woman or a man slightly modifying their voice tone. However, when RJ recited the rhyme to Jane, the tone was a bit lower. Is that proof that RJ is a man? Another hint that RJ may be a man is that John was strong enough to rather easily put the chair, with Jane still taped to it, back on its feet. Then again, Red John could be a strong woman.

One fan theory I couldn't shake throughout the episode is that Kristina is Red John. It really bugged me that she said Red John could redeem himself and that he is a man. Could it be that she said that because she is Red John? Plus, it does look iffy that she took her stuff, without messing anything in her bedroom, and left her home to go with him. I'm still not 100 percent sure that Kristina is with Red John but from the "Kristina would want me to send her love" speech, it does look like Red John has her. Red John could be Kristina and that she only told him that "Kristina sends her love" to throw the trail off of her. And Kristina could have killed her interviewer to have Jane and the CBI think that John was after her as he went after Jane a few years back. The killing happened after Jane explained to Kristina why her giving an interview was a mistake, which could have given her an idea how to throw suspicions off of her. If Kristina is not Red John, I wouldn't be surprised if she's somewhat involved in his killings.

One of my other suspects to be Red John is Brett Partridge. This is the agent who was at Marley's crime scene and who butted heads with Jane. Why do I see him as a suspect? First, he dislikes Jane. Secondly, Partridge was in the pilot episode. Is it a coincidence that he appeared in the pilot and, two years later, in the second season finale?

The main case of the week -- Marley's murder -- was really well developed. Not only did it look like Red John may have done it, but I never thought of the film students actually killing people to make a Red John movie. Even if Jane was pretty sure Red John didn't kill Marley, you could see it affected him big time. Of course, things got a turn for the worse when Red John did kill the interviewer. Not only that but the case of the week had Red John save Jane! Why? Because Red John loves to toy with Jane so he prefers having him alive than dead? Twisted!

Beside wondering who Red John is, I wonder why Jane didn't tell Lisbon what Red John told him. Is it because Jane wants to have the upper hand in the investigation? After all, Red John is Jane's case. Red John is Jane's life.

What did you think of the season finale? Do you think Red John is Kristina?

Wait, I have a question, what room is Jane in at the end of the episode??? And why does he seem to slightly smile at the very end?? I dont think I would be smiling if I were him....

Interesting that in the episode that just aired, "Red Queen", that Gale Bertram quoted from a William Blake poem. And Red John quoted from a William Blake poem. Not only that but Gale Bertram is only in episodes that have the words "Red" in the title.

Every episode, one way or another, has a reference to the color red.

All the Red John theories are great; the Red John mystery gives the show have some sort of backbone beyond the murder of the week, but as the show is wildly popular, and if it goes along typical network contract lengths it will have at least a seven year run. The producer has stated that "Red John" is a series ender, not a season ender, so it may be another four plus years, and maybe more, before Red John is uncovered!

Anyway I think it is Van Pelt....

I have a theory jelling around in my head, so random comments coming out. Yes, Kristina is part of the Red John conspiracy (but not Red John), that is the only reason Jane went out with her. He was looking for information. She would not have gone on TV if she were not part of it (that would be a slap in the face to someone she professed to want to see again). I like Brett Partridge as a possibility, only because I thought it was him the first episode (and my first instinct in most episodes has been right). If it isn't someone within the CBI, then someone in CBI must be part of the Red John group, or have been hypnotized, like I believe Rebbecca was in Red Right Hand. Rebbecca also recognized the person who poisoned her. I think Jane now knows who it is, but is not going to say anything for fear that Red John will be put behind bars, and out of reach. Non-Sequitur, there was a Marty in Red All Over. I'll keep working on it...

I agree with Red Dawn here. I think Brett Partridge as Red John is too obvious. The real RJ would never give such an obvious clue to Jane. He's just playing with Jane, sending him in another direction. Also, Partidge seems to dislike Jane, but I don't think the real RJ feels the same. I think he likes and admires Jane in a way.

About Kristina, I think she works for Red John. I think they prepared the whole dinner scene together; Kristina knew what she had to say to the waiter, Red John had probably done research about the waiter, so that Kristina would know that his mum and uncle had died, etc.

I used to think it was Virgil Minneli, but I've kinda fallen off that. Brett Partridge seems a little too obvious even with William Blake reference. Likely he's a red herring... something this show is full of. I would venture to guess that Red John is a character that hasn't been introduced yet.

An interesting thing about Red John, though, is that his personality seems to be like Patrick Jane's evil twin. His showmanship, attentiveness, etc. are like a dark mirror of Jane.

Anyone think it could be Lisbon, Jane did phone her to tell where he is. If RJ did kidnap Kristina he could of interrogated her.

For anyone who is interested the full William Blake poem The Tiger is as follows-

Tiger, tiger, burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

In what distant deeps or skies
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand dare seize the fire?

And what shoulder and what art
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
And when thy heart began to beat,
What dread hand and what dread feet?

What the hammer? what the chain?
In what furnace was thy brain?
What the anvil? What dread grasp
Dare its deadly terrors clasp?

When the stars threw down their spears,
And water'd heaven with their tears,
Did He smile His work to see?
Did He who made the lamb make thee?

Tiger, tiger, burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?

I think RJ is referring to the hole poem being about himself and Jane not just the bit that RJ said. The tiger represents RJ he is saying that he is a beast, a wild animal that will kill without remorse but, like a tiger, it is just the way he was made and a tiger, though a wild beast is still beautiful.

Part of the poem refers to Jane. 'What hand dare seize the fire?' could reefer to Jane 'confronting' RJ on TV. RJ decided to 'twist the sinews of thy heart?' by killing Jane's family. The 'And when thy heart began to beat, What dread hand and what dread feet?' is Jane when he realises what RJ has done.

The next part could refer to how Jane blames himself and RJ plays on this. 'What the hammer? what the chain?' means RJ is asking Jane if he himself is to blame for making the 'tiger' attack.

'Did He smile His work to see?' well I think we all know what that could represent.

What do you think? Am I looking too deeply into this? Personally I think another peace of poetry that fits RJ is from Goblin Market-

"We must not look at goblin men,
We must not buy their fruits:
Who knows upon what soil they fed
Their hungry thirst roots?"

I don't think Red John is the forensics specialist Brett Partridge because RJ is able to create such loyalty and love in others, like with Boscows sectary. I don't think Brett is capable of that. He is an unpleasant man little man and, as Jane said, he is 'ghoulih.' I don't think he would inspire love and I don't think he is clever enough to do what RJ has done.

I agree with the agent that was at Marleys crime scene theory. Its excactly what i thought when I first saw the episode. He seemed interested in getting Jane out of the Crime Scene. Also, he was interestedin what he was doing. Also, he has a distinct girlish voice with sometimes slightly lower tones which if you play back Red Johns voice to the agents, they sound eerily similar.
