Finale Week: What Should the 'American Idol' Top 2 Sing?

by Kim Potts, posted May 24th 2010 1:33PM

A very long season has come down to a final two that we certainly couldn't have imagined when the season began. Crystal Bowersox? Sure. But Lee DeWyze? The Chicago paint store worker seemingly came out of nowhere with weeks of performances that were under the radar. But slow and steady -- emphasis on the steady, since Lee, more than any other contender in season 9, has been consistent -- has won a spot in the finale, as the season 9 championship all boils down to Tuesday night.

There's been no official confirmation from Fox, but MJ's Big Blog suggests the "theme" for Tuesday night's performances -- where each of the Top 2 will perform three songs -- will consist of Crystal and Lee singing the dreaded songwriter's tune, and then each picking new songs or one of their best performances from the season for an encore.

There's not much to say about that songwriter selection that the eventual winner will have to record. As MJ says, last season's 'No Boundaries,' written by 'AI' judge Kara DioGuardi, was a new low in a history of original 'Idol' tunes that has included such clunkers as 'The Time of My Life,' 'This Is My Now' and, arguably most awful, 'Do I Make You Proud.'

As for the singers' choice tunes, this looks to be a tough battle, so it would seem lazy for either Crystal or Lee to do more than one encore performance. Really ... if you can't go the extra mile to do a new selection (or, better yet, two) in the name of winning a million bucks and a music career, why bother showing up?

And with that, some suggestions for Crystal and Lee ...

Crystal Bowersox: For a new song selection, anything Bonnie Raitt would be good. AOL TV Editor Patricia Chui wished for a Crystal performance of 'Something to Talk About' last week, and I second that, with 'I Can't Make You Love Me' as a back-up pick.

If Crystal chooses to do an encore of one of her earlier performances, then 'People Get Ready,' from Inspirational Songs week, has to be it, right?

Lee DeWyze: Again, ideally, both finalists would pick two new songs, and I'm still waiting to see/hear Lee perform Kings of Leon (preferably 'Use Somebody,' which you can see him doing on YouTube and Counting Crows ('Mr. Jones' is the first choice).

If Lee decides to encore one of his performances from earlier in the season, 'Simple Man' from last week is probably his best bet.

And is it safe to say we'd all like to see an encore of the Crystal/Lee duet on 'Falling Slowly'?
