'Dancing with the Stars' - Finale Recap

by Michael Pascua, posted May 26th 2010 2:00AM
Nicole and Derek perform the Argentine Tango on Dancing with the Stars(S10E19) The finale of 'Dancing with the Stars' had the smart notion of mixing in new routines with unnecessary fluff instead of just silly group dances or musical guests. We get to see the return of Buzz Aldrin and Kate Gosselin even though both don't get close to the final three contestants.

Finale starts off with a big group opening. I found it funny that Buzz and Kate stood with each other and didn't move much. It's like the Miss Universe pageant where the bad dancers are stuck in the back.

Niecy has a minor solo while all the pros have intense spins on the main stage. Kate is the most awkward during the soul train section. She couldn't even get walking and holding a fan right. Five bucks says she never practiced. Chad had a football related injury, but it seems like because of time constraints, we never get to talk to him again.

Round Three: Ranked Argentine Tangos

Nicole & Derek - Nicole slipped on the last lift on Monday. The two discussed which dance was their favorite and ended with the Argentine Tango. Turns out that everyone did. As the dance begins, one can notice how the dance is sharp and the lifts look effortless the second time around. While I would complain that the dance was a bit cold at times because of the precision, upon further inspection Nicole kept a very strong, passionate face the whole time.

Len loved the intensity, passion, and artistry. Bruno loved the magic and thought it was the embodiment of the Argentine tango. Carrie Ann thought each move was a masterpiece and calls them artistry in motion.

Evan & Anna
- Evan's freestyle was the lowest scoring performance and the two got emotional. The couple picks the Argentine Tango and decide to go with analysis of the previous dance to better their performance. Evan definitely paid attention to keeping a strong eye contact with Anna this time and tried his best not to look down. In comparison to Nicole & Derek, Evan doesn't do as much leg flicks as Derek. The amazing Anna spin had a bit of trouble getting out, but the two recovered well.

Bruno thought he was a lady killer, he kept the dance stylish and kept the power under control. Carrie Ann thought the dance was true redemption. Len thought it was the most fantastic season of the show. He was astonished by the lift and reminds the audience that Evan was the only celebrity male left and looked like he was the lead.

Erin & Maks - Erin managed to tie for first place. The couple picked the Argentine Tango over their Paso. Erin starts to blank out, stress out about the competition, and the two bicker some more. There's something less dynamic about the beginning of their Argentine Tango, but after the leap and spin, the two gained passion. The rest of the dance was clean and while Maks looked like he slipped in the final spin, he recovered well.

Carrie Ann thought the performance was amazing, from the lift on she was in the zone. Len knows that judging the final three dances will be the hardest. Erin worked hard and came the furthest. Bruno thought she had the most spectacular growth. Her performance's focus was great.

Final Rank
1st - Nicole & Derek (30)
2nd - Evan & Anna (28)
3rd - Erin & Maks (26)

Combined Scores
Nicole & Derek - 85 (55 + 30)
Erin & Maks - 81 (55 + 26)
Evan & Anna - 80 (52 + 28)

Eliminated Contestants Weeks One to Three
- We get a visual recap of the first three dances and eliminations. The clip ends and Shannen & Mark begin a dance and Shannen could have had potential. Her legs didn't seem to be in the right place and wobbled a lot. Her lift was interesting even though it wouldn't have been allowed within the competition. Aiden follows with Edyta and their performance was less stiff, but still not groundbreaking. For some odd reason Buzz gets beamed down and does the oddest Paso Doble routine with Ashly. I have to admit I hated the bedazzled outfit he was given.

Special Performance - Jake & Vienna
- Jake & Chelsie and Dmitri & Vienna perform to "On the Wings of Love." Sure, the performance was basically something ripped right out of 'The Bachelor.' Surprisingly Vienna does a decent job with Dmitry, which makes me think that it would have been interesting to see Jake take on Vienna. The couples looked very comfortable with the lifts and choreography. Eventually, the two come together and try their best to look romantic.

The Worst Meltdowns this Season

5. Nicole unnecessarily melting down to Derek.
4. Aiden doubting Edyta's choreography.
3. Jake's passive aggressive nature to Chelsie.
2. One of Erin & Maks' many bickering moments.
1. Kate sucking Tony's soul.

After the commercial, the couple landing in third place was Erin & Maks. Apparently, someone must have cursed because there was five seconds of awkward silence. Erin knew that she wasn't gonna make the final two, but she found her smile back after all of the peep-hole hoopla. Maks knew it was going to be a roller coaster journey and he feels like he's already won. I do think that if Erin had gotten second place in the Argentine Tango, she probably would have taken on Nicole.

Erin & Maks - Knockout Cha-Cha - It's almost disappointing for the two to perform the routine after being told they were eliminated. Interestingly, Erin was great with her leg placement and hip motions. I hope that in the original dance there wasn't as much boring waiting. The performance was fun, but almost choreographed in a way that the routine would have never happened anyway.

College Competition Finale

Purdue - Cha-Cha - While I was a bit surprised that Purdue made it through to the finale. The group does a better job with playing with formations the second time around. Overall, the group isn't well synchronized. Some parts looked sloppy and you could feel the nerves from that group.

Utah Valley - Samba - Their samba started off really interesting and the jumps were great. I did think that the way they didn't stick to one partner was smart. Their formations were amazing and the fact they didn't all so the same choreography made them look leagues above Purdue. The group's pot-stir was off time, but they ended with a beautiful routine.

After the dances, the judges agree that both teams improved, but Utah Valley are deemed the winners.

Special Performance - Kate & Tony - Kate's package mentions 'Kate plus 8,' but she's back practicing with Tony. The couple is doing "Paparazzi" and she wants to make sure that the choreography is more difficult, then she starts to back out. She doesn't want to still look dumb, but jokes around about how 90% of her fans don't like her. The couple reprises the beginning part of the dance, adding with a lift. The routine is a tad bit harder this time around but still awkward. The song switches over to "I Will Survive" with Kate trying her best to do something that looked like Cha-Cha. I'm not sure why, but they put Kate on a crane and lifted her away.

Eliminated Contestants Weeks Seven and Eight - Pamela starts off in a pretty circle above the audience. I find it funny that Tony and Dmitry got to dance with both women, because neither really had time to have fun this season. Damian looked gorgeous with just the tie on when he finally joined Pam. While Pamela continued to look unhinged, she had a lot of technical moves down. Niecy gets quite jiggly in her solo. Most of her dance consisted of booty shaking, but is really fun to watch. It was ironic how gay Louis looked; someone in the costume department hates him.

Round Four: Final Knockout Dance

Nicole & Derek
- Jive - Nicole picked the jive because of her intensity, hopefully channeling rock & roll. Nicole starts out slow and smooth, then gets hot and sexy; just like Tina Turner herself. The two do everything possible, Nicole even with her hair in her face. Somehow the dance manages to not look too frantic, but actually calculated. The dance is intense from beginning to end and while I'm not sure that the jumps and lifts were really allowed, they were beautifully done.

Len had to finish his scores, but admits that Nicole should be the winner. Bruno thought that the couple has produced some of the most creative routines. It was the crowning glory. Carrie Ann knows that Nicole is incredible, the couple has been amazing. Score: 30 (10,10,10).

Evan & Anna - Quickstep - Evan knew that picking the quickstep would be the perfect dance because of the precise choreography. I'm a bit disappointed that the song "I Want You to Want Me" was used again (Season Seven with Cody & Julianne), but since it was the celebrity's choice, I guess we have Evan to blame. The performance was technically pretty to watch, and the couple covered the stage beautifully and their final leap sequence was spot on.

Bruno loved how his performance level has been enhanced. He's dashing and sexy. Carrie Ann knows that Evan has won the hearts of the audience because of how he attacked the dance. Len thought he was a joy to watch and did a fantastic job knowing how he's had to jump around many cities. Score: 28(10,9,9).

Final Scores

Nicole & Derek - 115 (28 + 27 + 30 + 30)
Evan & Anna - 108 (28 + 24 + 28 + 28)

After the viewer's votes were added in the winners of 'Dancing with the Stars' Season Ten are Nicole & Derek. Nicole can't do anything but scream in excitement. Evan is grateful for his appearance. After being awarded, Nicole and Derek are lifted up in celebration.

A big congratulations to Nicole & Derek and don't forget that Utah Valley fought a well deserved fight as well. I'm not surprised at all that the final two were Nicole & Evan, but with the judges score disparity you knew it was Nicole's win. Hopefully, Nicole can use her win to segue her new single, knowing that the Pussycat Dolls have allegedly split up. She's a great dancer, no matter what genre she did. I do not think that celebrities should be on the show who dance as a part of their regular jobs or careers -- no matter what kind of dance you do in your line of work. They have an unfair advantage in that they have rhythm, they are familiar with dance steps, they know how to move their bodies, etc.

this was a lot better than last year when Donny won. Mia should have won.

I was voting for Nicole right from the very beginning. Just because she's a singer doesn't mean that she can do ballroom dancing. I thought she was fantastic in every single performance and think she really deserved it. I was so happy that she won, and excstatic when the nocandance Kate was bumped off. Anybody can just walk across the stage as she did most of the time!

I think Kate was paid off to act, you could tell. No one no matter what your dance back ground is could play so dome, making believe. Pleaseeeeeeeeeee she was acting. Make the show more serious next time will you?

She's not just a singer - she's a professional dancer - maybe not a ballroom dancer but a dancer just the same. When you come in knowing how to dance you've been given the edge. That's what was boring. (She was also so conceited - worrying about her camera angles and how she would look - it was really hard to like her at all.)

This is the most boring, predictable show I've ever seen. And I wouldn't doubt if it was fixed. How else could Kate Gosselin stay on as many weeks as she did, and then the final three end up exactly how the judges wanted them (like they always do).

The only thing exciting about this season was Pam Anderson and she got voted off too early. We all knew Nicole would win. She was a pro from the beginning. Why did you let Jake bring his girlfriend on to dance? My friends and I almost threw up. He is so full of himself anyway. He and Kate would have been a great pair!! Not a great season.

I agree totally. The first reation was isn't she a professional stage dancer? At the end, the same answer from the pre-season. It was a fix to boost ratings.
As for the return of everyone, that always happens

Stupid season - really boring. If they bring in another professional dancer I won't waste my time watching.
