Disney Picks Up New Dance-Centric Comedy 'Shake It Up!'

by Rich Keller, posted May 27th 2010 8:45AM
The teen dance-comedy 'Shake It Up!' will premiere on Disney Channel in the fallWith folks like Miley Cyrus and Selina Gomez quickly growing out of the roles that made them household names, Disney Channel is looking to fill the gaps with some new comedies. Viewers have seen one of these results already in Sunday night's 'Good Luck Charlie.' Now the cable network has greenlit a series that will mix comedy with dance.

The new show -- titled 'Shake It Up!' -- will introduce viewers to CeCe Jones and Rocky Blue, two teenage girls and best buds who become backup dancers on the popular teen dance program 'Shake It Up, Chicago.' The show will mix dancing with traditional, three-camera comedy as the girls learn the ropes, battle against the stereotypical rivals, and adjust to their new-found fame.

A production of It's A Laugh Productions, the company behind all the current, live-action comedies on Disney and DisneyXD, 'Shake It Up!' has some strong talent working behind the scenes. The show is created by writer Chris Thompson, whose credits include 'Laverne & Shirley,' 'Bosom Buddies' and 'The Naked Truth.' Co-producing the show with Thompson is Rob Lotterstein, producer of comedies such as 'Suddenly Susan' and 'The War at Home.' Rosero McCoy, who choreographed the upcoming 'Camp Rock 2 The Final Jam,' handled the dance numbers for the pilot show.

'Shake It Up!' is scheduled for a fall premiere on Disney Channel.
