'So You Think You Can Dance' - 'Auditions: New York & Miami' Recap

(S07E01) 'So You Think You Can Dance' returns claiming that the show will get tougher. If the first auditions were a harbinger of what is to come, the talent looks about the same to me. The two hour premiere featured the New York City and Miami auditions, but less than an hour was used for Miami showing that the talent that showed up for Miami must not have been too strong. While Mia Michaels and Adam Shankman joined Nigel in NYC, Sonya Tayeh and Jason Gilkison helped out in Miami. The choreography round had choreography provided by Courtney from season four and Jason from season five. It felt like there were less bad performances in the premiere, but Mike Perlman and Jamie Grecko brought the laughter to the show.
New York Auditions
The Good
Sarah Brinson - The fat Charleze Theron had strong lines and was very mature as a dancers. Unlike Megan later, Sarah apparently wasn't "too" fat.
Giselle Peacock & Henry Byalikov - The Burn the Floor dancers both produced a dirty, amazing samba with African undertones. They were easily advanced to Vegas.
Teddy Tedholm - Teddy's back but without the loud pants. Teddy has a lot of controlled chaos and produced one of two routines that made the judges cry. He has raw emotion, but I hope he doesn't get cut in the same round.
Chris "Isolock" Dixon - Trained by the first locker, Kevin Porter, Chris is the definition of a dancer great at one genre, but that's it. I was hoping his Bollywood Knee-spins and Russian kicks would have shown more, but alas, he didn't understand the Contemporary choreography round.
Edward Spots - Edward reminds me a lot of Brandon from season five, except he actually has some passion in his face to match the intensity of his
The Bad
Mike "Lazer" Perlman - Part of the "1 2 3 Party" Crew looked like a cross between a jazzercise instructor , a gymnastic bad cheerleader.
Scott Vogel - The body fluid cleaner/cereal bar proprietor was funny, but knew he wasn't going to make it through. His country line dance inspired dancing may have been good for the country clubs, but not for SYTYCD.
Jamie Grecko - While the low-budget horror film producer was a bit horrible, he/she knew it and played it up. Jamie's play with fruits and vegetables were hysterical and I couldn't stop laughing when he dropped the orange.
The Cut
Wadi Jones - The parkour/free runner couldn't hack the choreography round, but I would love to see him try out for 'Ninja Warrior.'
Megan Carter - While she got cut at the choreography round, Megan was the best plus-sized dancer I've ever seen. Nigel knew the reality that she would probably be cut a lot; he probably noticed that she wasn't strong enough for pairs dancing, but I wish her well in the future.
Cavalcade of Contemporary Dancers - While we met several dancers quickly either getting their ticket automatically or past the choreography round, the standout male and standout female was Daniel Baker and Brianna De Falco. Both had strong performances from the short amount that we got to see.
Miami Auditions
The Good
Michael Petr - He made it all the way from Germany to gain a ticket to Vegas. He was inspired by 'Dirty Dancing,' and while Michael was a strong dancer, he was a great partner.
Tyrell Rolle - While I hated the basketball shorts, this Liberty City dancer had spot on lines and a very strong sob story.
Henry Rivera - Sure, he may have stuttered his words, but his movements made up for it. Nigel loved out his combination of technique and performance; he easily made it to Vegas.
Ami Aguilar-Riley - The mother of one brought a very sharp self-choreographed routine. Luckily she picked up other people's choreography as easily and made it to Vegas.
Jose Ruis - This b-boy produced amazing belly mills (a variation of the windmill) and had great body control. I appreciated that he knew how to gain speed int his headstands His choreography round was decent enough to get him through.
The Bad
Daria Kopylova - The father/daughter dancers disturbed me because she kept dropping her head near her father's crotch.
The Cut
Candice Craig - Candice was my definition of what a Miami auditioner should have been: sensual with strong control of their their body. She had some very strong jumping splits. She may have been too sexy for the judges and got cut after the choreography.
It's still too early to make judgments on who can make it further on the show, but hopefully all of the dancers spend some time practicing some genres outside of their own during the time between the auditions and the Vegas round. Did anyone stand out for you? Leave comments below.
