'The Special Relationship' (Sat., 9PM ET on HBO) covers the so-called "golden years" of the Clinton administration. The film focuses on the president's friendship with British Prime Minister Tony Blair (played by Michael Sheen). We get to see Blair's rise to power, the Monica Lewinsky scandal, and the war in Kosovo. At the end, we are given a glimpse of the years to come, as George W. Bush and Dick Cheney take power in the U.S.[Spoiler alert.]
In one of the of final scenes of the movie, Bill Clinton (Dennis Quaid) warns Blair specifically about Bush and Cheney. "Be careful," he says to Blair. "These guys -- they play rough. Their administration has been born in controversy, national shame, and illegality -- and it is my bet that that's the way they'll go out."
Considering that Blair later aligned himself with Bush to help start the Iraq War, this speech might provide a chilling vision of the future. Or you might see this as a welcome moment of change. All depending on your political point of view, of course.
