ABC Passes on 'New Adventures of Old Christine'
So much for new adventures: Sources confirm that 'The New Adventures of Old Christine' will not be moving to ABC. The network had been considered a possible new home for the show after it was canceled by CBS on May 18.
According to the Ausiello Files, Warner Bros. TV, which owns the five-year old Julia Louis-Dreyfus vehicle, officially pulled the plug yesterday after talks with ABC broke down. The news follows surprise reports last week that ABC had also declined to rescue 'Ghost Whisperer' after it was canceled by CBS.
ABC had a two-year deal in place to acquire both shows if CBS passed on them, and while it had been thought more likely that it would pick up 'Ghost Whisperer,' as it was an ABC Studios-CBS TV Studios co-production, executives at the network had expressed interest in picking up 'Old Christine' over the last few seasons.
'The New Adventures of Old Christine' ran for 5 seasons and starred Julia Louis-Dreyfus ('Seinfeld') as Christine Campbell, a recently divorced single mother whose ex-husband (Clark Gregg) has a new girlfriend (Emily Rutherfurd) also named Christine. "Old" Christine lives with her brother (Hamish Linklater) and runs a gym with her best friend Barb (Wanda Sykes). It initially had strong ratings and reviews but had lost viewers and was canceled shortly after coming back from a long hiatus.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus won an Emmy Award for the role in 2006 and the show was seen as having broken the "'Seinfeld' curse," which dogged the post-'Seinfeld' careers of her co-stars. Star vehicles for Michael Richards ('The Michael Richards Show'), Jason Alexander ('Bob Patterson' and 'Listen Up!') and Louis-Dreyfus herself ('Watching Ellie') were all canceled after just 1 season.
'Ghost Whisperer' starred Jennifer Love Hewitt as Melinda Gordon, a woman who could communicate with the dead and help them to pass over to "The Light." it also ran for 5 seasons and over one hundred episodes. Like 'The New Adventures of Old Christine,' its once-strong ratings had declined over the last couple of seasons.
