'So You Think You Can Dance' - 'Dallas & Nashville Auditions; Vegas Callbacks Part 1' Recap
(S07E03) Here's a tip for any contestant auditioning for 'So You Think You Can Dance,' if you audition for the show with dorky sneakers and normal, non-baggy, jeans and try contemporary dance, you will automatically have five seconds of camera time and be laughed at. The Dallas auditions brought some good dancers, but continued the trend of an insane amount of contemporary dancers making it to Vegas. I'm shocked about the Nashville auditions; there were only seven finalists that made it through to Vegas. Oddly, none of them are featured.
The remaining contestants that made it to Vegas were quickly cut in half after two days. Nigel and the rest of the judges mean business this season and aren't allowing any dancers that are only good in one genre squeak by. We only saw one contestant have to dance for his life.
Dallas Auditions
The Good
Ida Saki - Ida won me over when she made twiddling thumbs look cool. She danced with the energy of her mother with her and was a great opening to the episode.
Nicole Knudson - Odd hair choice aside, there was an amazing combination of ease and control in her body. Nicole also made a strong effort to connect to the judges, which helped a great deal.
Marcella Raneri - With a lingerie designing mother and mobster father, Marcella had a very interesting back story. Her audition choreography was stereotypical and had no emotion. In choreography, she kept a smile plastered on her face. I feel like she'd be lost in her sea of contemporary blond females.
Jordan Johnson - Jordan had a very moving sob story, but his dancing was strong and he played with the music really well. I was disappointed that we didn't get to see the full tutting section and shocked he wasn't sent to choreography to make sure he could learn quickly.
The Bad
Conor McLaughlan - "Scooter Rocket" looked like a really drunk member of Break Sk8te. I worried that he would fall right off the stage. Luckily he had a really positive attitude about the whole situation.
Deroccious Harris - I've yet to see the combination of masculine and sassy and Deroccious looked like a pop cheerleader with light touches of vogue. He didn't fit the standards of the show and didn't make it past auditions.
The Cut
Haylee Durbin - While she danced in the memory of her father, she had awkward transitions, bad tension and made stank faces. While she was eliminated in the choreography round, her partner didn't help the situation.
Nashville Auditions
The Good
Brian Gaynor - Sure, he's not going to fit the partner work of the show, but he's winning his battle against scoliosis since Season 3. He's still amazing at what he does. We'll probably see him on a results show.
The Bad
Faith Looney - Faith did the most sedated flamenco I've ever seen. Obvious cut.
Shanya Vaughn - If Faith had the most sedated flamenco, Shayna did the most sedated hip-hop routine. She should probably also dance with a sports bra the next time.
Vegas Callbacks
Day One
Solos - While all the contestants had solos, we re-meet Billy Bell from Season 6 and Alex Wong from Season 5. While both made it to the top 20, both had complications. While both grew in the time they were out, I was in awe of Alex's almost contortion-like dance moves. We also find Anthony Bell from this year's New York auditions with a pulled hamstring. He musters through and all three make it past day one.
Hip-Hop Round - While Tabitha was without her husband Napoleon today, she provided some very interesting choreography. We lose a handful of dancers we meet including plus-sized dancer Sarah Brinson from the New York auditions; I'm not sure if she could have made it past even if her back was at 100%.
Day Two
Ballroom Round - We find out that while Toni Redpath is a brash teacher, she just wants her choreography to be perfect. While we just met Jordan an hour ago, he wasn't strong enough to make it through. Similarly, big-haired Nicole just squeaked by after putting her hair down. We had one contestant, Adechike, dance for his life. He easily made it through, but it had to be dumb for him to unleash a sub-par tap dance routine during day one.
I'm very excited to see Alex Wong's return and hope that he can make it. If one also looked at shots, Billy Bell's replacement Brandon Dumlao also has been surviving the cuts. We'll see if he gets any camera time.
