Romantic Comedy Tries to Make a Comeback for Fall TV

No doubt about it, comedy is big in television once again. A quick glance at the new fall television schedule shows well over a dozen new programs spanning the gamut from workplace and family comedies to one starring William Shatner as a grumpy old man who says strange and embarrassing things. But the biggest sub-genre of comedy for next season is one that hasn't been seen in a long time: romantic comedy.
The networks have a total of seven new romantic comedies on the slate for next season. This is big news since many of these folks have shunned nearly all forms of comedy in the last few years. However, with the resurgence that took place last season -- thanks in no small part to the success of ABC's Wednesday night comedy block -- the networks are testing the waters once again with some romantically-tinged laughs.
Here's a breakdown by network of the romantic comedies that may succeed or bomb once September rolls around.
For a network that hasn't had a successful romantic comedy on the schedule since 'Mad About You,' NBC is taking the plunge into the deep end of the ocean with three new series: 'Perfect Couples,' 'Friends With Benefits,' and 'Love Bites.' All the shows feature young folks trying to find their way through the world of romance; yet, they have a uniqueness to them and are definitely more adult in nature then what we've seen come out of the NBC comedy vault.
Out of three, the one that looks most interesting is 'Love Bites.' No, it's not another young-vampires-in-angst show! Rather, it's an anthology series that hearkens back to the classic ABC show 'Love, American Style,' the hour-long program features a series of short vignettes loosely connected by an underlying theme. Featuring stars from a number of other shows, including current and past NBC programs, 'Love Bites' may have enough variety to keep viewers tuning in each week.
ABC, which has reestablished itself as a comedy powerhouse, goes with two new romantic comedies: 'Better Together' and 'Happy Endings.' Like the comedies NBC is launching next season, the ABC rom-coms feature young people trying to find and stay on the path to love. In fact, both 'Happy Endings' and NBC's 'Perfect Couples' seem to be very similar in scope. On the other hand, 'Better Together' leans more towards the traditional sitcom route with some typical romantic situations. With 'Happy Endings' and 'Perfect Couples' being somewhat the same, 'Better Together' may have the upper hand in gaining an audience.
FOX, which has failed miserably over the last few seasons when it comes to live-action comedy, may have a winner this time with the rom-com 'Running Wilde.' Not only is it written and created by 'Arrested Development's' Mitch Hurwitz and Jim Vallely, but it also promotes Will Arnett up to series star and co-creator . And his romantic foil on the show?' None other than former 'Felicity' star Keri Russell. As long as FOX does the proper promotion and 'Arrested Development' fans tune in early to see what it's all about, 'Running Wilde' could become the live-action, comedic hit the network has been looking for.
Finally, CBS has only one new romantic comedy on the fall schedule -- 'Mike & Molly.' Right off the bat it has an advantage as its creator and executive producer is Chuck Lorre, who currently owns one half of the network's successful Monday night comedy lineup (two nights when September rolls around.) Situated on Monday night, featuring the talents of 'Gilmore Girl's' Melissa McCarthy and Swoozie Kurtz, and produced by the man who gave us the popular rom-com 'Dharma & Greg,' 'Mike & Molly' has a definite advantage and could be an instant winner.
Which one of these shows will you tune into?
