'Torchwood' Finds a Home on Starz

by Laura Prudom, posted Jun 7th 2010 3:11PM
Johnny Depp isn't the only Captain Jack that hoists our mainsail -- John Barrowman's Captain Jack Harkness also gets our flag flying, and according to the Ausiello Files, U.S. audiences are about to see a whole lot more of him.

Michael Ausiello is reporting that cable network Starz has acquired the rights to the new season of British sci-fi series 'Torchwood,' which enjoys a cult following stateside along with sister series 'Doctor Who'. The 10-episode run will air summer 2011 on Starz (in the U.S.) and BBC One (in the U.K.).

According to Starz, the new season will take on more of an "international scope," which will allow show creator Russell T. Davies and his writer's room to tell "a more explosive and global story, one that takes advantage of the unlimited narrative opportunities of a premium television service like Starz."

As well as series regulars John Barrowman and Eve Myles, a number of new characters are expected to join the team, with Davies back at the helm creatively.

The show has attracted both controversy and critical acclaim for its portrayal of same-sex relationships and its decision to feature its main male lead as bisexual (Barrowman is openly gay). Russel T. Davies is no stranger to such themes, having created the original, British version of 'Queer as Folk,' which was later adapted for US audiences by Showtime.

'Torchwood' has been the subject of much buzz recently, following Fox's recent decision to pass on a U.S. version of the show.

so sad sy467785, the "gay thing" is such a small part of the show and gay is in the world. Everyone does not like every show. you will get over it. i dont like reality tv, straight or gay. so i dont watch those. good thing i dont act the same way about the "straight thing" or there would be no tv to watch.

I don't care if he's bisexual, gay, or whatever; Captain Jack is one of the best-looking hunks on TV! In addition, for Torchwood I'll even be willing to pay for Starz!
Ever since the SciFi Channel decided to flunk their spelling bee, they have been rolling downhill faster and faster. Since Stargate SG1 & Stargate Atlantis ended the channel has just died off. Stargate Universe may share the name, but it's not just in a different universe . . . it's in a different reality! Since it really all started with BBC and Dr. Who I guess it's fitting that they have reminded us what good SciFi is! Thank you England!
[For those of you who don't know (like the idiots at the "SyFy" Channel) SciFi is an abbreviation for Science Fiction that goes back to the 1950's!]

Is BBCA not actually a part of BBC or something? Seems like that's the only possibility here.
