Just in time for its 25th anniversary, 'Voltron,' the memorable, classic cartoon from the 1980s is being reincarnated for a new generation of viewers. According to Cynopsis, World Events Productions, in cooperation with Classic Media, will launch 'Voltron Force,' a new animated series that will air on NickToons starting in 2011. The two companies, who were previously working on a live-action 'Voltron' movie, will work with 'Wolverine and the X-Men' producers Kickstart Productions to produce an edgier and modernized version of the giant robot and its handlers. In addition to the 26-episode animated series, Classic Media and WEP will handling licensing for a series of new toys.
Premiering in the United States in 1984, the original 'Voltron: Defender of the Universe' became an instant hit in an era of transforming robots like the GoBots and Transformers. Two versions of the show were released in the U.S. -- Vehicle Voltron and Lion Force Voltron, with the most popular being Lion Force. This version featured five robotic lions piloted by members of the Galaxy Alliance and, eventually, Princess Allura or the planet Arus, that could combine into a giant, sword-wielding robot.
Their mission was to protect Arus from the machinations of King Zarkon and Prince Lotar, who would conveniently provide an evil, giant, robotic menace for Voltron to fight in each episode.
For those who can't remember -- or were born after 1985 -- here's the intro to the original 'Voltron.'
