Ed Asner has been cast as Tom Arnold's father in the CMT pilot 'Regular Joe.'Emmy-winning legend Ed Asner has joined the cast of the new CMT comedy pilot 'Regular Joe.'

According to Live Feed, the 80-year-old actor will play Joe's father on the series, about an outspoken man (Tom Arnold) who hits the dating circuit after separating from his longtime wife, played by 'Yes Dear's' Liza Snyder.
If 'Regular Joe' is greenlit, it will mark Asner's first regular TV gig since his portrayal of Wilson White on the NBC dramedy 'Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip' in 2007. Prior to that, Asner appeared as John Goodman's father on the short-lived CBS sitcom 'Center of the Universe.'

The pickup will also continue a trend of placing older, veteran actors on sitcoms, a trend that includes Betty White on TV Land's 'Hot in Cleveland' and William Shatner on the upcoming CBS series '$#*! My Dad Says.'

'Regular Joe' is one of four comedy pilots CMT ordered to bolster its scripted lineup. No word as to when the pilot will be aired for consideration.

Asner, who recently voiced the role of Carl Fredricksen in the Oscar-winning 'Up!', is best known for his work on such TV classics as 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show' and its subsequent spinoff, 'Lou Grant.'
