According to Tom Cruise, he appeared at the MTV Movie Awards as foul-mouthed studio executive Les Grossman from 'Topic Thunder' in lieu of hosting the show.

Cruise was approached by MTV to provide host duties for the awards, but couldn't because of work on his upcoming film 'Knight and Day,' he said on 'Good Morning America' (weekdays, 7AM ET on ABC).

"They came to me and they wanted me to host the show and I just didn't have time ... And so I said, 'Look, how about Les Grossman produces the show for you? And we'll just kind of play that as a joke,'" Cruise said.
