Spacey Pitching 'The Crux' to Showtime, HBO

Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey is pitching a show in which he would play a cult leader, according to Vulture. The piece originally cited that Spacey was in talks with Showtime and had personally pitched President of Entertainment Robert Greenblatt, but was later updated to reveal that HBO was also a contender for the show. Vulture mentions that Spacey's schedule could be a sticking point. He is the artistic director at the Old Vic Theatre in London, and IMDB lists seven different projects involving Spacey either in production of in development. That's not including the upcoming 'Bagman,' a fictionalized account of Jack Abramoff's various scandals.
But having Spacey's show on the schedule would be attractive to both networks, especially Showtime, as it continues to build its reputation as a rival to HBO. The negotiations will be interesting. Showtime has Jeremy Irons aboard for 'The Borgias,' while Vulture notes heavyweights Dustin Hoffman, Diane Keaton and Kevin Kline are working on shows for HBO. That might be putting pressure on Showtime to come up with their own big-name projects.
And, as Vulture also mentions, the show seems to fit Spacey's repertoire well. He has a history playing the power mad, from Lex Luthor in 'Superman' to 'Se7en,' 'The Usual Suspects' and 'The Men Stare at Goats.'
Even thought the project is still being negotiated, Rod Lurie, who is helming the upcoming 'Straw Dogs' remake, is reported to be attached to write the pilot. Spacey and Lurie would also produce. Spacey's last regular TV role was on the CBS crime drama 'Wiseguy' in 1988.
