'American Idol' Lowers Age Limit to 15
Last year's edition of 'American Idol' was the least watched in years, as lethargic fans complained about what many perceived to be a particularly uninspired group of contestants. Well, don't worry, folks, because the producers at 'American Idol' have come up with the perfect plan to fix the problem: more tweens. Yes, watch out Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus, because 'American Idol' is coming for you: According to USA Today, 'American Idol' is lowering the age limit for contestants from 16 to 15, effective immediately.
Considering the widespread feeling that the show has suffered from a lack of talent in recent editions, tweaking the age restrictions in order to open up the field to a broader range of participants isn't a complete surprise. But based on how last season went, it seems that 'American Idol' is increasingly less concerned with the amount of talent but rather with the type of talent, as the show continues to skew younger as it chases the teen and pre-teen demographic.
In some ways, the shift makes sense, as it's been clear from recent results that the teenage voting block powers the competition; recent wins by wholesome, mainstream boys like Lee DeWyze, Kris Allen and David Cook over quirkier -- and arguably more talented -- performers like Adam Lambert and Crystal Bowersox are living proof. And the show has recognized this by bringing teenybopper icons Cyrus and Bieber onto the show last season to cater to this rabid and obviously marketable demographic.
Whether or not the change will have any actual effect on the competition, of course, is another matter, as the youngest participants each year rarely make it through the early rounds, David Archuleta being a rare exception. And the move is not likely to endear 'American Idol' producers to older fans already feeling disenfranchised by a voting system that rewards copious free time, disposable income and obsessive-compulsive behavior.
Those traits, however, are also what turn kids into massive pop superstars. So as long as it brings the ratings and gives the show a chance at staying relevant -- and perhaps even creating a Cyrus or Bieber of their own -- you can be sure that 'American Idol' will continue to change whatever rules necessary to keep that bubblegum flowing.
