No Joy in Lima, Ohio: Producer Ryan Murphy Nixes 'Glee' Movie ... for Now

The music stopped today for 'Glee' fans hoping to see the hit show take its tunes to the big screen.

"There will be no 'Glee' movie in the foreseeable future," producer Ryan Murphy told Entertainment Weekly. "Despite overtures, I and the studio (Fox) have decided we want to put our energy into the second season with no distractions for the cast."

'Glee' has been a major hit for Fox. The freshman series, which follows the eclectic members of a high school glee club and faculty, debuted last fall to solid ratings, but skyrocketed in popularity when it returned in April. With 'American Idol' as a lead-in, the series remained the big show on campus all season long.

In recent weeks, the Web has been abuzz with rumors about plans for the show's movie adaptation, thanks to a leak about its stars' contracts, which commit them to appear in up to three movies based on the series.

While Murphy's news may be a let-down for so-called "Gleeks," at least one member of the cast will be arriving in movie theaters soon -- albeit in a role unrelated to the series. Lea Michele, who plays 'Glee''s resident diva Rachel Berry, is lending her powerful pipes to 'Dorothy of Oz.,' the forthcoming 3D musical that picks up where 'The Wizard of Oz' left off, and features Dorothy back in Oz and on a mission to track down Tin Man, Scarecrow and Lion.
