Robert Redford Discusses the Gulf Oil Spill (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Jun 22nd 2010 2:55AM
Robert Redford Discusses the Gulf Oil Spill 'Larry King Live' (weeknights, 9PM ET on CNN) featured a special benefit to raise money for the victims of the BP oil disaster. Among the many guests was actor Robert Redford.

Host Larry King asked environmentalist Redford to share his feelings about the crisis. Redford had this to say: he was filled with "heartbreak" and "frustration." Yes, we pretty much all feel the same way. Redford also thought that the disaster was "avoidable." He said that the national tragedy was a result of a combined failure involving the oil companies, Congress, and the government in general.

The actor then went on to discuss prior disasters, stating that they should have prepared us for this, or helped us to avoid it -- if only we had been paying attention.

What do you think? Is Redford correct in his critique? Was all of this easily avoidable?

Who the hell is Robert Redford when it comes to oil spills ? That's like asking an engineer for advice on a movie script.. you are famous and you know how to fix the world .. What a joke..

actors spend trheir careers pretending to be
someone else...I am not sure they know when to stop!
they become all sorts of experts. Fact is this
deep water drilling is new and this is on the fronteir..nobdy has the answer to all issues and
noone is prepared for all contingencies...if we waited for that in all our endeavors we'd still be in caves...think about this..we still are not in total control of fire!

I don't like Obama but I hardly think there was much he could do. The federal regulators have been in bed with oil executives for a long time, allowing shortcuts etc. which resulted in this mess. It is sheer hypocrisy for everyone to whine about this unless you are willing to give up your automobile. We are hopelessly dependent on oil, so pony up or shut up. Meanwhile there is oil to be gotten from the ground or from much shallower water if the green extremists would let us. Shame on BP for not having a better plan how to cap a massive leak like this. Shame on rich liberals like Robert Redford who seem to want massive federal intervention on every issue at an exhorbitant tax price because when you are massively wealthy no amount of taxation will affect your lifestyle so you can pitch rampant federalism all day. The rest of us are barely surviving.

The fact remains, that in taking on such a
responsibility of this magnitude,
"cutting corners" should have been out of
the question, especially under the direction
of a comptetant CEO.Now, side stepping and
unacountability is all that they have to show
for their outcome

Okay, so let me get this straight...he should have stepped into office looking at an oil problem, that wasn't yet an oil problem and focused on the crap that GEORGE BUSH left behind when he moved out. Are you seriously suggesting that instead of focusing on the crashing STOCK MARKET heist, the COLLAPSING BANKS and economy as we know it, the HOUSING crisis, the LOSS of JOBS, the HEALTH care problem, which were all waiting behind the door when he put the key into the front door of the White House, the 1st thing he should have done was something about a possible problem in the MMS Dept and future oil spills. If he had done this, then what would you All have said then, about his ability or inability to run this country. Hey, you all are still using your credit cards, doing business at your bank, have or seeking a job, getting extended unemployment benefits etc.--you're not jumping off the tops of buildings because the world economy has collapsed...at this point in time he has saved your rear ends from total annihilation and kept China from knocking on your door and taking those grandchildren (they make everything you're buying)! A lot has happened since this man took office, have some gratitude and stop being such whiny snits!

You people are really a piece of work....do you really know what a President does. If you think a President is a George Bush I or II or a Pale Palin,or a Nazi Cheney, I've got news for you. You're a bunch of air heads and truly should not be given an opportunity to express any thoughtful or educated opinions. I hope most of you made it thru 8th grade for God's sake and then if you did you certainly didn't understand a word of what was being taught; uneducated mass of foolishness, with illogical and uninformed thinking processes. To Urkel's mother: I pity your grandchildren; you can't teach them a thing! Sorry, you think like an idiot! There are a whole lot of folks on here ranting, whining and raving about stuff you have no facts to back up! Stop smoking whatever it is you're smoking and go to the library and start reading some books, so you'll know what you're talking about.

Hey, Rata, maybe you aren't as smart as you think that you are or you just can't comprehend and retain what you read.

Hey I voted for him, but he could have prevented the spill and minimized the damage - he's looking as inept as Bush - the only thing he's left out is telling someone "Nice Job, Brownie." This is worse than Katrina - Katrina was an accident/act of God. This was NOT an accident - this was substandard construction! That was rubber stamped by Obama's (NOT Bush's) thoroughly corrupt office of minerals/mining. Even The Devil's own Haliburton (a subcontractor on the project) told BP it was substandard - this is HALLIBURTON "hey, BP, look, we love evil and greed as much as the next guy, but these blueprints are horsecrap." If Haliburton is suggesting you're evil, you are EVIL. Obama could have prevented the spill by 1. having been EFFECTIVE in replacing all the crooks in the minerals/mining office; then he could have 2. minimized the damage by accepting the offer of supertankers from Northern Europe immediately - but of course that would require A) waiving the union-soaked Jones Act, can't do that, PLUS B) it would undo his DNA that the Fed govt is EFFECTIVE, and is the solution.
3. How about just not being massively naive when BP says it's "1000 barrels a day, relax".
Govt should REGULATE, YES, ENFORCE, YES, but not try to DO. Private sector - regulated and enforced is the imperfect solution but better than any other alternative.
Expect the health insurance plan to run with the same ineptitude. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss - the only difference is the dealer deals from the bottom of a DIFFERENT deck.

With comment by Larry King "DEAD"-- I think Obama should go ask the "brilliant" people on the VIEW for help in solving this problem- Between those "four" idiots, Jerry Springer, Maury Povitch, Judge Judy, Jeanne Garfaolo and Rosie Odonell--- ALL SOLVED !!!!
