Spoilers Anonymous In-Depth: 'Desperate Housewives' Cast Changes

by Isabelle Carreau, posted Jun 22nd 2010 1:00PM
Spoilers Anonymous - Desperate HousewivesThis is Spoilers Anonymous In-Depth, a weekly column here at TV Squad where we discuss and give our two cents about recently-released spoilers and how they may affect the storylines, shows and fans. This in-depth version of the column goes hand in hand with our weekly spoilers column where we supply you with the dirt on some of the more popular shows on the air.

This week we discuss various spoilers recently released for the upcoming season of 'Desperate Housewives.'

While shooting of new episodes has yet to begin, spoilers have been pouring in for the upcoming season of 'Desperate Housewives.' A season-one series regular is returning, a current regular is leaving and Vanessa Williams is moving to the block. A recurring role will also be recast while the series is looking to add various characters to the series. Quite the shake up, no?

- Dana Delany and Kyle MacLachlan will not return as series regulars or a recurring cast members. They may guest star.

I'm not too bummed about the news that Delany will not return, as the show has not been that kind to her this past season. When she was introduced, Katherine Mayfair quickly become one of my favorite characters thanks to her Bree-like qualities. But her storylines the past season and a half were boring me. I hated seeing her spiral down as she stalked Susan and Mike, stabbed herself, and blah blah blah. It seemed like the writers didn't know what to do with her anymore. Let's hope Delany will get better material on her new show.

As for Orson, I've been complaining most season about the fact that the character was no longer useful and was actually hurting the show more than helping it. Even though Orson was more bearable in the last episodes of the season, it will be a great change to see Bree single once again.

- Paul Young is returning to Wisteria Lane and is the one who rented Susan's house. Not only that, but Paul will be joined by his new young bride, Beth. Turns out his 30-year-old bride contacted Paul while he was in prison and eventually became involved with him. Beth is described as being quirky and having a painful past.

I don't know about you, but I was almost jumping up and down when I first read the spoiler that Paul Young would be back. Paul never was a favorite of mine, but his return to Wisteria Lane can only mean twisted storylines that will have emotional impact on the characters. Just imagine how berserk Susan will be when she discovers that her enemy Paul rented her home! This will give plenty of reasons for Susan to visit Wisteria Lane in order to snoop on Paul

Even if Paul's return will rock the lives of the housewives, it won't be as rocking as the news that he replaced Mary Alice with a 30-year-old quirky girl. To our viewing pleasure, the housewives will more than likely give Beth a hard time and will surely try to find the reasons why she and Paul married. I can't wait to hear Mary Alice comment, in her narration, about her replacement, you?

- Vanessa Williams was cast in the new regular role of Renee Filmore-Jones. Her character is described as a woman who went to college with Lynette. The two were rivals way back in the '80s. Renee has been married for years to a handsome, hunky man. They have no kids.

I loved Vanessa Williams on 'Ugly Betty.' She was the perfect vixen and I truly hope that she brings the same evil magic to this show. Having Renee, one of Lynette's rivals, move to the lane will mean tons of flashbacks and backstabbing. Will Renee pick up where she left off with Lynette? Will she try to make a move on Tom? Having Renee be a soccer mom-type housewife would be a total let down.

- The series is looking to cast the role of Keith, a sexy 30-year-old contractor who is described as a charming playboy. In various sources, Keith was also the name of Renee Filmore-Jones' husband. Same character?

New hunks, no matter the storylines, are always welcome eye candy on Wisteria Lane, no?

- Susan and Mike are getting at least one on-screen neighbor -- a 60-to-80-year-old named Maxine. She is described as a sweet lady who has an unusual job that brings in some additional income.

Will Maxine be the apartment version of Karen McCluskey? I'm definitely intrigued by the "unusual job." Is it XXX related? One thing is certain, we can expect Susan to not know from the start what Maxine's job is, then see Susan get hints about the job, which will prompt Susan to do some digging. As usual, she will be clumsy during her investigation and will be put in all sort of wacky situations.

- The show is looking for a 12-year-old actress to take over the role of Penny Scavo.

The news doesn't say if the current actress who plays Penny asked to be let go of her contract or if the show decided she wasn't doing the job anymore. If the show decided to change actresses, is it maybe because Penny will get more screen time and they needed a more powerful/believable actress in the role?

What do you think of these cast changes and additions? Are you looking forward to Paul Young's return? Do you think Vanessa Williams will make a good addition to the cast?

The show is so over, the stories, just everything. Time to pull the plug... It lasted long enough.

I think the show is on its last leg; has gotten totally out of hand with innumerable ridiculous scenarios. This could be 'my' last season to watch.
The one actress that should be in all episodes is Mrs McClusky; totally interesting, sharp, funny, etc. Her t.v. sister Lily Tomlin episodes were great, they'd make the ideal "Snoop Sisters" return to t.v.
Well, we'll see what the new season has to offer.

I'm looking forward to Vanessa Williams. I found her Ugly Betty schtick to be a bit campy. Bring back that power hungry/domineering/lovable bioch from Soul Food instead, and I'll be happy.

I hope they rock the Scavo household this season by bringing back the Lynette's stepdaughter Kayla. That was good television.

Loves me some Bree. I even like Marcia Cross' commercials.
