Casey James on Singing With Bret Michaels and Taking His Shirt Off on Tour

by Andrew Scott, posted Jun 23rd 2010 2:00PM
Casey JamesCasey James made an early splash on this season of 'American Idol' when he took off his shirt during his now-infamous audition.

Quickly, though, the 28-year-old Texan proved to be more than just a hot bod, thanks to such memorable performances as 'Jealous Guy' during Lennon/McCartney week.

Last week, the third-place finisher gave TV Squad an update on rehearsals for the Idols Live! tour, which kicks off Jul. 1 in Auburn Hills, MI. Read on to find out what he's planning for his upcoming album, what it was like to sing with Bret Michaels and whether he'll actually take his shirt off on tour.
Are you nervous at all about the first show?

No. I'm excited about it. I can't wait to do it. I mean, I've been playing shows for a long time -- not for stadiums, but it's gonna be exciting.

Can you tell us one song you'll be singing on tour?
I don't want to blow it. Everybody's been asking me, and I've yet to give up any information. It's only a few weeks [away].

Have you started working on preparations for your album?
Yes, actually, I have. I'm really working on song selection and whatnot, because that's going to be the most important thing. I just want to make sure I get right material out there.

Do you know what it's going to sound like?
I want to do kind of like a crossover, you know, country-rock thing ... I'll have some acoustic stuff on there, slower stuff, [as well].

Casey JamesDo you plan to do any of the songs on it?
Yeah, I definitely want to. It's just a matter of whether I have the right stuff, because I've written a ton of material, but if it's not gonna work, I'm not force it to be on there.

You sang 'Every Rose Has It's Thorn' with Bret Michaels at the finale. Did he give you any advice after the performance?
We hit it off really well. He said a ton of stuff, and he was just inspirational, I guess would be a great word. He's just a good guy, and he had nothing but good things to say. It was pretty amazing, really.

There's been talk that he might replace Simon Cowell. Do you think he'd make a good addition to the judges' panel?
He knows the business, he knows music and he's got a great personality. I think he'd be a very good addition to the show ... It was pretty amazing [to meet him]. I felt so honored that I got to be a part of that performance. For me, it wasn't about me doing a song. It was about me just being there with him in that moment, and it was a huge honor. I was very proud to be a part of it.

You recently shared a birthday with Michael Lynche. Did you two do any celebrating together?
I had a laid-back birthday. We kind of celebrated at another time. We were up in New York, and we just kind of went out and had a nice little night on the town. It was a lot of fun, man. We have a good time together.

Casey JamesWill we see you take your shirt off on tour?
Definitely not, no. [Laughs] I did that because I had to, and now I don't have to. I don't think anybody wants to see that, anyway. [Laughs]

Is there anything you don't miss about being on 'American Idol'?
I think the show, for me, was a way to start my career, and it did that in a bigger way than I ever thought possible, so I'm super-thankful for every single piece of it. And so, in that way, I'm gonna miss everything about it. Now it's moving forward and doing what you want to do, career-wise, so in that way, I'm not going to miss anything. [Laughs] It's kind of the best of both worlds. I appreciate it for everything that it's done, but in that same sense, it's over and it doesn't need to be happening anymore.

You're now on Twitter. Are you getting bombarded with crazy tweets from fans?

Quite a few. But I just skim right by them -- you know, marriage proposals and funny stuff like that. But it is what it is.

Great things to come for a great guy like Casey. Wish he'll be promoted internationally and so the international fans can watch him in concert tours. As to his album, it sounded good because he's picking the songs. I'm really excited about his album. Can't wait to buy it.

Yeah, go Casey!! Great news about him assembling an album. C James is also a charismatic, nice, classy guy who interviews well. Love his music and instrumental skills. I'm rooting for his future and hope that he gets big. Want his album. Want to see him in a show.
Sort of like my other big fave, Siobhan Magnus.
Tought I note it is highly unlikely anyone has asked Siobhan if she plans on taking her shirt off, like the other eye candy on the male side - Tim and Casey.
Would do wonders for ticket sales, though...
