'So You Think You Can Dance' - 'Top 10 Perform' Recap

(S07E08) With the field narrowed down to 10, we learned a little more about the contestants' childhoods Wednesday night on 'So You Think You Can Dance'. There was video of Billy in pleather dancing to The Backstreet Boys, and a snapshot of young Cristina dressed up as a flower but no video or photos of Adechike dancing: A 2004 fire destroyed all his family mementos.
The judges argued about whether Robert was dominant enough in his tango (Nigel said yes, Mia said no), and whether Lauren has a sway back or a "really good butt."
One dancer went "from a boy to a man," another was called a "shining light" and a third's dance was dissed as a "bad experiment."
Cristina and Pasha -- Paso Doble (Jean-Marc Genereux) Nigel raved that Cristina brought "passion, power, fire and control" to the paso, which elicited an approving growl from Cristina, as Cat pointed out. Mia called the dance "fabulous" and Adam proclaimed it "mucho caliente" adding, "You set that stage on fire."
Alex and Lauren -- Broadway (Tyce Diorio) Could Alex top last week's contemporary duet that was praised as the best dance ever on the show? Clearly not. While the judges praised his technique, they missed the "internalness" required of a Bob Fosse routine. Adam complained that the entire performance was at the same level: "A lot of flash and no smolder."
Adechike and Allison -- Contemporary (Mandy Moore) Last week, Adechike was slammed for not showing enough emotion. This week, Nigel praised his "major improvement," but the effort clearly showed. Mia found his smiling inconsistent, which made it seem "false." Adam phrased it as, "You're dancing from your head... you need to get out of your head and just let go."
Ashley and Mark -- Jazz (Travis Wall) Nigel criticized the choreography for not being jazzy enough and that he "hadn't really learned anything" about Ashley this week. (Hey, we learned that she's turning 20 on Saturday, thanks to friends in the audience.) Mia praised her, saying, "You are one of my favorite girls," but asked her to focus on her transitions
Billy and Comfort -- Krump (Lil C) Could Billy Bell be tough? Lil C dubbed his krumping, bad-attituded persona "Billy B Buck," but the judges weren't convinced. Mia sighed,"You were trying to be a badass," but ended up more "Billy B. Wack." Adam dubbed it a "bad experiment." Although Adam prefaced the critique with, "You're one of the best dancers we've ever had on the show," he still got booed.
Robert and Anya -- Argentine Tango (Jean-Marc Genereux). Their smoldering routine gave Cat "chills" and Nigel thought Robert looked "magnificent," (hear, hear) but Mia felt that pro Anya completely overshadowed him. Adam praised his beautiful footwork and thought he looked "fabulous, but really stressed out."
Melinda and Ade -- Contemporary (Stacey Tookey) Nigel and Mia both praised her surprisingly graceful lines -- although Mia wasn't fond of that "Mother Earth" costume -- and Adam raved that she was "fantastic."
Jose and Kathryn -- Bollywood (Nakul Dev Mahajan) Did the B-boy make a convincing Bollywood dancer? Not so much, but as Mia said, "It was just fun." Adam said the dance was "totally wrong" but, "If there were a prize for the brightest light on this show, you would have won it already."
Lauren and Dominic -- Lyrical Hip Hop (Tessandra Chavez) Lauren, whose perpetual smile was knocked by the judges last week, was required to show some anger in this routine about an abusive relationship. Nigel told her, "I believed the performance." Mia thought Lauren was "outstanding." Adam praised her for listening to his advice from last week, telling her, "You just turned into an actor,."
Kent and Courtney -- Jazz (Tyce Diorio) Creating sexual tension was definitely a stretch for this wide-eyed small-town boy. I was impressed with how much he did stretch, but Mia and Nigel wanted more. Everyone seemed distinctly uncomfortable discussing whether Kent could be sexy and partner Courtney didn't answer quickly enough when asked if she "wanted to eat him alive." How would you answer that?
All-Stars sitting out this week: tWitch and Neil.
Based on tonight's performances, who do you think will be in the Bottom Three tomorrow night? Cristina and Melinda, who had to dance for their life last week, were both much stronger in week two. The most criticized performance was Billy's, but Jose and Kent were equally out of their element.
