Daytime Emmy Predictions 2010

by Allison Waldman, posted Jun 25th 2010 3:30PM
general_hospital_abc_sonny_olivia_carnivalThis Sunday, June 27, CBS will broadcast the Daytime Emmys live from Las Vegas, starting at 9PM ET. The show should be fun, with Regis Philbin hosting, and Ryan Seacrest, Donny Osmond and Chubby Checker celebrating Dick Clark with a special tribute.

But for soap fans, the real fun will be seeing who's winning this year's top prizes. Here, then, are our predictions ... Please feel free to share your views in the comments and make your predictions, too!

Outstanding Drama Series
'The Bold and the Beautiful'
'The Young and the Restless'
'General Hospital'
'All My Children'

Last year, 'B&B' was the surprise winner in this category, landing the top Daytime Emmy after 22 years on the air.

Could 'B&B' repeat? Yes, but it's not likely, even though the submission was Betty White as Stephanie's mother dying with dignity. 'Y&R' has had a very uneven year overall, especially with the overuse of evil twins, but the submission was Victor's transplant. There's some question about how 'AMC' was even included here, but the 'Who Shot Adam?' story was noteworthy.

My prediction is that 'General Hospital' is going to take the Emmy with it's big carnival/car crash story. 'GH' has won this award before with big, showy explosive events, like the Metro Court hostage crisis.

Outstanding Talk Show/Entertainment
'Rachael Ray'
'The Ellen DeGeneres Show' ✔
'Live With Regis and Kelly'

Last year, 'Rachael' was a bit of a surprise winner for this Emmy, but to me there's no competition -- 'Ellen' should win.

Outstanding Talk Show/Informative
'Dr. Phil'
'Dr. Oz' ✔
'The Doctors'

Do you think a doctor is going to win in this category? 'Dr. Oz' is not only informative, he's connected to Oprah. I know, 'Dr. Phil' is, too. But it's going to be an 'Oz' win.

regis_and_kelly_live_disneyOutstanding Talk Show Host
Rachael Ray, 'The Rachael Ray Show'
Bonnie Hunt, 'The Bonnie Hunt Show'
Dr. Mehmet Oz, 'The Dr. Oz Show'
Regis Philbin, Kelly Ripa, 'Live with Regis and Kelly' ✔
Whoopi Goldberg, Sherri Shepherd, Joy Behar, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, Barbara Walters, 'The View'

I can't see Dr. Oz winning in this category, and I don't think Rachael's very worthy. I believe it's Regis time for the Emmys, and it'll be the first for Kelly as a talk show host.

olivia_natalia_guiding_light_cbsOutstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series
Crystal Chappell, Olivia, 'Guiding LIght' ✔
Michelle Stafford, Phyllis, 'Y&R'
Maura West, Carly, 'As the World Turns'
Sarah Brown, Claudia, 'GH'
Bobbie Eakes, Krystal, 'AMC'

If I were voting, Crystal Chappell would be a shoe-in for this Emmy. As Olivia, she confesses her unexpected love to Natalia. But will the fact that 'GL' is off the air hurt her chances? Maura West has a very strong submission, Carly's intervention, and Sarah Brown's reel is Claudia's grief over her miscarriage. Stafford and Eakes are on the outside looking in to me. I'm predicting Chappell will take home the Emmy.

billy_jack_the_young_and_the_restless_cbsOutstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series
Peter Bergman, Jack, 'Y&R' ✔
Jon Lindstrom, Craig, 'ATWT'
Michael Park, Jack, 'ATWT'
Doug Davidson, Paul, 'Y&R'
James Scott, EJ, 'Days of Our Lives'

There's a lot of good competition here, but Peter Bergman's reel -- Jack blasting Billy for sleeping with Sharon -- may be the best. If not Bergman, then it's Michael Park, as Jack tells Katie he shot his brother, Brad. If there's an upset, James Scott will be the winner, as EJ sees Grace's body in the morgue.

viki_jessica_one_life_to_live_abcOutstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series

Beth Chamberlin, Beth, 'GL'
Julie Pinson, Janet, 'ATWT'
Carolyn Hennesy, Diane, 'GH'
Arianne Zucker, Nicole, 'DOOL'
Bree Williamson, Jessica, 'One Life to Live' ✔

Since comic actresses rarely win the Emmy, dear Carolyn Hennesy probably doesn't have a shot to win. Too bad. She's wonderful. On the other hand, Bree's multiple personalities story, with Erika Slezak as her scene partner, looks like a winner. Nothing against Zucker, Pinson and Chamberlin, but Williamson is the likely victor.

lucky_luke_general_hospital_abcOutstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series

Billy Miller, Billy, 'Y&R'
Bradford Anderson, Spinelli, 'GH'
Jonathan Jackson, Lucky, 'GH' ✔
Ricky Paull Goldin, Jake, 'AMC'
Brian Kerwin, Charlie, 'OLTL'

If this award were for an entire season, Billy Miller would be the hands-down winner. Instead, it's probably going to be Jonathan Jackson for 'GH.' His submission includes Anthony Geary, and its a Christmas show rife with emotion. Goldin's intensity makes his reel a worthy entry, and so does Kerwin's. Anderson, like Hennesy, suffers from being essentially a comic character in a race that rewards drama. I'm predicting a Jackson win.

betty_white_the_bold_and_the_beautiful_cbsOutstanding Drama Series Directing Team
'GH' ✔

This is a very tough group; all the Emmy reels are strong. I'm going to go with 'General Hospital' for the carnival crash aftermath. 'OLTL's' crash story is similar, if not as broad a canvas. If not 'GH' or 'OLTL,' 'B&B's' story about Ann's choosing how to die on the beach was very strong. 'AMC' setting up Stuart's murder was competent, not compelling.

reese_bianca_all_my_children_abcOutstanding Drama Series Writing Team

'B&B' ✔

'AMC's' wedding of Bianca and Reese was a landmark -- a lesbian wedding. 'Y&R' also submitted a wedding, Billy and Chloe's, albeit not a landmark one. A lot happened in the 'ATWT' submission, James gets killed, Janet stops Liberty from getting an abortion ... The winner will be 'The Bold and the Beautiful' for the Ann story, and her daughters choosing to honor her wishes not to let her die in a hospital bed.

As for the rest of daytime, here's the fearless predictions:

giada_at_home_food_networkOutstanding Culinary Program

'America's Test Kitchen'
'Gourmet's Adventure with Ruth'
'Giada at Home' ✔
'Tyler's Ultimate'

All worthy candidates, but 'Giada at Home' is not only a beautifully produced show, it also includes amazing food and Giada's lovely family. The dark horse candidate would be 'America's Test Kitchen' which is more of a down to earth, consumer-oriented show, but very well done.

good_morning_america_team_abcOutstanding Morning Program
'Good Morning America' ✔
'CNN/American Morning'

It's a horse race between 'Good Morning America' and 'Today,' but I think the stronger show this past year was 'GMA,' even with the changes in personnel. It should take the Emmy.

Outstanding Game/Audience Participation Program
'Wheel of Fortune'
'Cash Cab' ✔
'The Price Is Right'
'Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader?'

It wouldn't be surprising if 'Jeopardy' or 'The Price Is Right' won in this category because they've won in the past. I'm predicting that 'Cash Cab' will repeat last year's victory.

cash_cab_ben_bailey_discoveryOutstanding Game Show Host
Wayne Brady, 'Let's Make A Deal'
Pat Sajak, 'Wheel of Fortune'
Alex Trebek, 'Jeopardy'
Ben Bailey, 'Cash Cab' ✔
Carnie Wilson, 'The Newlywed Game'

If 'Cash Cab' is good enough to win Outstanding Game Show, the host should be recognized. This is Ben Bailey's year.

Outstanding Culinary/Lifestyle Host
Bobby Flay, 'Grill It with Bobby Flay'
Ina Garten, 'Barefoot Contessa: Back to Basics'
Paula Deen, 'Paula's Best Dishes'
Martha Stewart, 'The Martha Stewart Show'
Giada De Lauretiis, 'Giada At Home' ✔

Food Network has the inside track here with four nominees, and I'm betting on Giada taking the prize, with Ina and Bobby trailing behind. I love Martha, but I think she's still carrying baggage that'll keep her from getting the Emmy this year.

Who do you think should win Daytime Emmys this year?
