'So You Think You Can Dance' - '1 of 10 Voted Off' (Recap)
(S07E09) Two of the same dancers from last week landed in the Bottom Three again, despite both delivering much stronger performances the second week out. Which just proves that this competition is as much (or more) about personality as it is talent -- after all, the champ's title is "America's Favorite Dancer," not "America's Best Dancer." For the first time this season, a male dancer -- and a favorite at that -- was in jeopardy. Mia told Robert, "You are one of our favorite performers this season, so fight with everything you've got."
"I'm shocked, I don't get it." Adam Shankman said about Cristina's having to dance for her life again, especially since all the judges loved her passionate paso doble with Pasha.
Group Performance - Another sexy, dynamic routine from Sonya Tayeh, although with the overly red lighting, it was sometimes hard to tell who was who among the Top 10. Is it just me or is Robert getting most of the solos here?
Dance Performance - RemoteKontrol got a special invite at this year's Nashville auditions to perform this season. The three-man crew is fronted by Brian Gaynor, the determined dancer with scoliosis who made the judges cry with his solo 'Fireflies' routine. Decked out in head-to-toe metallic gold, they looked and moved like "living statues" in a sweet reminder that dance defies limitations.
Musical Performance - "Costa Rican superstar" Debi Nova, backed by six of the All-Stars, looked like Carmen Electra, with a touch of Shakira's hips and a bit of Fergie (she's previously worked with the Black Eyed Peas). Cat towered over the petite singer and joked that if Debbie ever needed a bodyguard, she was available.
Solo Performances
Cristina - 'Quimbara' - She demonstrated she's a sensational salsa dancer who loves what she does
Melinda - 'Heels' - It was hard to watch her feet with those distracting, extremely unflattering, skintight red pants on, but her tap didn't seem different from anything we've seen from her before.
Robert - 'Everywhere I Go' - As a contemporary dancer, Robert definitely has the edge in solos as he was able to show off considerably more versatility and drama than a tapper and a salsa specialist
The decision by the judges was not unanimous: Nigel called Robert up first to tell him that since the season started off with one extra male dancer and a girl was sent home last week, it would be an obvious call to cut him. Robert's sigh of relief was heartfelt and I'm so glad to see him stay as he's one of my favorites as well.
Nigel told Melinda, "I don't know what it is, but the public are not connecting with you." He said he thought it was her time to leave, but he was outvoted by Adam and Mia, so it was Cristina leaving this week.
Cristina took the news well; after two weeks in the Bottom Three, she had to have mentally prepared for an early exit. Nigel told her, "You were absolutely brilliant last night," and told her the choreographers all praised her work ethic. (Was it necessary to mention that she was "sometimes a little slow" to move when told?)
Cristina was emotional as she said goodbye, but vowed not to cry.
Do you agree with Nigel that Melinda, not Cristina, should have been cut? Or would you have sent home a different dancer entirely? And was Robert's landing in the Bottom Three a fluke, or a sign of things to come?
