TLC Announces 'Cake Boss' Spinoff Series

by Kim Potts, posted Jun 25th 2010 9:00AM
So you say you wanna be a master baker, a connoisseur of cake, a pro in the world of pastry? Here's your chance to show the world what you can do with a little bit of flour, a little bit of sugar and a whole lot of fondant: TLC confirmed yesterday that a new spin-off of its runaway hit series, 'Cake Boss,' will give aspiring bakers the chance to work with the 'Cake Boss' himself, Buddy Valastro.
Casting will get underway immediately for the untitled series, in which 10 budding Buddys will compete in an eight-episode series of challenges, with the winner nabbing an apprenticeship with Valastro at Carlo's Bakery in Hoboken, New Jersey.

Those who fancy themselves the "next great cake artist" can apply for the show at TLC.com. (Sample question on the application: "What is your unique 'Baking/Culinary Point of View'?). Filming is scheduled to begin in September, with the series set to debut on TLC in December.

The gig should prove to be a high-profile one, as 'Cake Boss,' now in its third season, continues to draw nearly two million viewers per episode, and has made a bonafide star of the charming Valastro, the head baker of Carlo's, which is owned and operated by a crew that includes his mother, sisters, brothers-in-law and sundry other relatives.

In November, Valastro will release his first book, 'Cake Boss: The Stories and Recipes from Mia Famiglia,' and the Carlo's Bakery Website already sells a line of t-shirts, hoodies, chef's jackets and aprons.

Valastro is also on tour -- rock star baker! -- with the "Bakin' with the Boss" tour, an interactive show that finds him entering show venues with Def Leppard's 'Pour Some Sugar on Me' blaring in the background, before he takes the stage to chat, answer audience questions and, yes, make some pastries.

Meanwhile, an upcoming episode of 'Cake Boss' will also feature footage from last weekend's Hoboken block party that celebrated Carlo's Bakery's 100th anniversary.

SOOOOOOOO terribly disappointed & upset by the flavor of the "show" I always loved your sweet nature & amazing talents. Now you come off like a mean spirited, hateful human being...it isn't the least bit flattering for any amount of money. Be yourself..go back to what works..you make me sad, Buddy, you really do the way you talk to those people. I want the old Buddy back. Kate

Buddy, soooo disappointed in the new show. Don't believe I'll be back to watch that! To try and take back the pass you had given the day before! SHAME ON YOU! To embarrass the man like that. He shouldn't even have had to participate in that event since he had the pass in the first place. I saw worse cakes that his there.

These people on this show can sometimes be loud and obnoxious however I do still enjoy watching it....Besides I prefer a cake boss and a cake boss spinoff than more freaking shows on Kate Gosselin who should get out of the spotlight and stay the heck out good grief.

He makes some massive cakes and I enjoy seeing them being put together and delivered.

I love Cake Boss! This seems like a real reality show, as in there are no obvious ulterior motives for anyone on the show. The interaction within the people on the show is genuine and entertaining (mainly because it is genuine and believable). I will give the spin off a chance but I don't have high hopes for it. I do like to watch the other "cake" shows on television alson (with my 6 year old son), but we just like to see the finished product. It is amazing what can be done with a cake now-a-days. We dvr the other shows and just fast-forward until we get to see the final result, then delete the show. With "Cake Boss" I actually watch the episodes. Good luck Buddy, don't let this spin off and any new apprentices you may get ruin what is a good thing.

In a way you are right...But Cake Boss is the only one worth watching. I watched other "cake shows" and they were boring. Cake Boss is different because not only do they make some bad a** cakes they are all family and they show family get togethers on the show and stuff like that. Its a great show. Way better than all the others in my opinion

Hey alk02g - Yes, the publisher is Free Press/Simon & Schuster, and it looks like a really fun book:

A reality show. A cooking show. Two very good reasons to not do a spin-off. All reality shows should be placed on one channel so they won't interfere with serious TV.

I agree with you whole-heartedly, John. Just like they have a cartoon channel and a game show channel, all of this inane garbage should be moved to a single channel (or channels). Although this is several levels above the empty-headed drek we see out there ("I'm A Celebrity....;" "Wipeout," etc.), I'd still like the networks to return to "regular programming."
