She's one of the best scene-stealing actresses in movies and TV, but Judy Greer has yet to seal her breakout starring role on the tube. Will the CBS midseason comedy 'Mad Love' finally be it?The '13 Going on 30,' 'Arrested Development,' 'Jawbreaker' and 'Miss Guided' star, who currently provides the voices of several characters on FX's raunchy animated comedy 'Archer,' and the voice of Wendy on Nickelodeon's 'Glenn Martin DDS,' has taken over the 'Mad Love' lead from 'Party Down' star Lizzy Caplan, who had shot the pilot, but couldn't commit to the role beyond that.
The 'Mad Love' plot is a familiar one -- four friends, living in New York City, trying to find love -- so the writing and the cast will obviously need to be strong to elevate the show past the been-there, seen-that vibe its general description conjures.
In fact, the series, according to Deadline, wasn't given a 13-episode commitment for a midseason premiere until the cast was in place, and Greer's hire locks in a line-up that also includes 'Scrubs' star Sarah Chalke, 'American Pie' star Jason Biggs and 'Reaper' and 'Sons of Tucson' star Tyler Labine.
Earlier castings for the show, which was originally titled 'True Love,' included 'Friday Night Lights' star Minka Kelly as Kate, the role now played by Chalke; 'Balls of Fury' star Dan Fogler playing Larry, the role now played by Labine; and 'The Electric Company; star Ashley Austin Morris as Connie, the role Caplan took over for the pilot, and which will now be played by Greer.
'Mad Love' was created and will be produced by former ABC and NBC Entertainment president Jamie Tarses and her producing partner/brother Matt Tarses, a writer and producer on 'Scrubs' and 'Sports Night.'
Meanwhile, Greer, who had also been in consideration for a role on the next season of 'Desperate Housewives,' according to Deadline.com, continues to be busy on the big screen, as well. She's currently in theaters in 'Marmaduke,' and also stars in the upcoming sibling comedy 'Peep Show' with Michael C. Hall and Sarah Silverman; 'Henry's Crime,' another 2010 comedy, with Keanu Reeves, Vera Farmiga and James Caan; the romantic comedy 'Love and Other Drugs,' with Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway; the 2011 George Clooney dramedy 'The Descendants'; and the comedy 'Jeff Who Lives at Home,' with Ed Helms, Jason Segel and Susan Sarandon.
