Stop the Kardashians, Please!
Do we really need more of the Kardashian family? Apparently, E! thinks so because the network is ready to do a second spin-off of 'Keeping Up with the Kardashians,' this one all about the newlyweds, Khloe and Lamar Odom. The plan is to show the couple as they deal with getting settled in their new home, Khloe's attempts to be a stepmother to Lamar's children and Khloe and Lamar's efforts to have a baby.
Look, we all enjoy a little Kardashian kookiness, whether it's Kourtney's crazy relationship with Scott, Kim's heartbreaking split with Reggie Bush, Kris's constant screw ups -- even Bruce's colonoscopy! This family has been fun to watch, but there is such a thing as too much Kardashian and E! could do us all of a favor by turning off the spinoff machine.
Case in point is the first spin-off, 'Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami.' In Miami to open a new store, the sisters spent most of the time going to clubs, getting drunk, fighting with each other, and talking about the men they've been "boning." They acted like rowdy sailors during Fleet Week. Overall, it was horrible TV.
The original 'Keeping Up with the Kardashians' is all about contrivances. Heck, all reality shows are semi-scripted, but the 'Kardashian' shows raise the bar with fake conflicts and ridiculous situations. Do we need another Kardashian show that'll be more of the same?
Of course, the main reason this is happening is this: Khloe and Lamar's nuptials -- 'Keeping Up With the Kardashians: The Wedding' -- had the highest rating for the series to date, and the following week's show drew 4.1 million viewers. Here's the promo that ran at the time:
If Lamar Odom, a member of the NBA champion L.A. Lakers, is really interested in making this marriage work -- and he seemed sincere on camera -- he should convince his wife to keep their private life a little bit more private. Watching them trying to have a baby is just more intrusive than necessary, especially when they give it the "Kardashian treatment."
So, please, stop the Kardashian expansion now -- may the TV gods help us if Kendall and Kylie, the teenage sisters fo Kim, Khloe and Kourtney, get their own show.
