The Spark Is Back: Last Night's 'So You Think You Can Dance' Was Buck!
I had pitched my editors here at TV Squad an opinion piece griping about how this season of 'So You Think You Can Dance' is lacking. There were so many things I was going to complain about: I missed seeing Mary Murphy at the judges' table; I didn't like the dancers being partnered with all-stars; and I found the show hard to watch because of the direction and the lighting. Then I watched last night's episode, and...
THE HOT TAMALE TRAIN PULLED INTO THE STATION!!! AND I HOPPED RIGHT ON IT!!!
I loved last night's show, and here's why ...
The judges got with the program. While I still miss my Mary Murphy and her wild antics, Nigel Lythgoe, Mia Michaels and Adam Shankman -- who all seemed like they could have used a shot of Red Bull in previous episodes -- finally came alive last night. How could they not? The dancing was amazing, and that's what 'So You Think You Can Dance' is about. When the dancing is hot, the show is hot.
I can see clearly now. The director made some tweaks to the camera work and lighting design, making the performances easier to watch. Thank you! Our comments on Facebook and Twitter really do make a difference!
More dancing, more fun. Solo numbers were added to the mix, increasing the amount of dancing we actually saw on the show. I would rather see the dancers dance than see the judges trying to fill up time by going off on tangents like they have on previous episodes.
Chemistry is brewing. I was having trouble connecting to the performances these last few weeks, mainly because the dancers are paired with all-stars from previous seasons. While it is great to see some of my favorites from seasons past, including Neil, Mark and Comfort, I do miss watching two newbies share in the struggle to master styles that don't come naturally to them. There was a high level of drama and excitement in their camaraderie that I found missing between this season's contestants and their more experienced all-star partners.
But last night I finally saw some genuine chemistry forming between the newbies and the pros, with the best couple being the most unexpected one -- Alex and all-star Twitch. A ballet dancer tackling a Tabitha and Napoleon hip-hop routine with the incomparable Twitch seemed like it could only end in dance disaster. But Alex turned it out, feeding off of Twitch's energy and matching his mentor move for move. I couldn't even stay in my seat for that one. I got up and cheered Alex on as he tore up the stage.
When 'So You Think You Can Dance' literally has me on my feet again, that says something. After a rough start to the season, everything gelled on last night's episode.
If I have one complaint (let me hold onto at least one!), I would appreciate it if the solo numbers were a tad longer. Just when a dancer gets going, the solo comes to an abrupt end.
Nigel, can you do something about that for me?
Did 'So You Think You Can Dance' turn up the volume for you last night?
