Adrienne Barbeau Joins 'General Hospital' ... and More Soap Casting News

adrienne_barbeau_2008There's been a bunch of news from the soap world, stars signing, some leaving and a few old favorites returning. Here's the scoop on the soap opera revolving door:

-- TV/film star Adrienne Barbeau is joining 'General Hospital' as of August 12. The actress -- best known as Bea Arthur's daughter on 'Maude,' as well as movies like 'Swamp Thing' -- has been cast as Suzanne Stanwyck.

Stanwyck is closely aligned to Vanessa Marcil's character, Brenda, who will be returning August 11.

'GH' headwriter Bob Guza told Michael Logan that Suzanne is a tough dame. "Despite her hard edge, Suzanne has a lot of love for others, including Brenda -- she's her confidante, so to speak," Guza said.

-- Stacy Haiduk has landed an interesting role on 'Days of Our Lives,' after being let go by 'The Young and the Restless.' Haiduk is an excellent actress, as her dual role on 'Y&R' demonstrated.

On 'DOOL,' Stacy is back behind bars, only instead of a mental patient like Patty, Stacy will be playing a prison warden named Jane. Her role starts in September.

kristian_alfonso_hope_days_of_our_lives-- 'Days of Our Lives' is keeping Kristian Alfonso as Hope. The actress has just signed a new contact with her soap home, where she has been playing Hope Williams Brady on and off since 1983. "It's always nice to be invited back," said Alfonso of the new contract. In an era when many veterans --like 'Days' stars Deidre Hall and Drake Hogestyn -- have been shown the door, this is welcome news indeed.

-- There's more 'Y&R' news: the character of Ryder Callahan is being written off. That means goodbye to young actor Wilson Bethel. He told SoapCentral.com at the Daytime Emmys that he will be exiting in the next few weeks. "I wish it could have lasted a little longer."

However, two characters who have been off the 'Y&R' canvas for a while -- one because she's dead -- are returning. Despite the fact that Hope is dead, Signy Coleman is coming back to 'Y&R' to reprise the role. She's probably going to be haunting her son, Adam (Michael Muhney).

Meanwhile, with all this business about Jill (Jess Walton) being a Fenmore cropping up, Lauren's (Tracey Bregman) mother, Joanna Manning, will be back for a visit, with actress Susan Seaforth Hayes playing the role once again.
