Ratings Race: 'Hell's Kitchen' and 'America's Got Talent' Remain Untouchable

by Jason Hughes, posted Jul 7th 2010 9:00PM
'Hell's Kitchen'It's no wonder Fox (3.1/10, 6.81 million) keeps giving Gordon Ramsay new shows when they all perform so strongly. Even against NBC's (2.7/8, 9.116 million) 'America's Got Talent,' Ramsay held tough. Nobody could touch NBC in total viewers, though, now that 'AGT' has expanded to two hours.

CBS (1.4/4, 8.15 million) continued to do very well with their repeats of both 'NCIS' and 'NCIS: LA,' but against 'America's Got Talent,' the latter is hurting, and 'The Good Wife' doesn't stand a chance.

ABC (1.8/5, 5.439 million) has a clear winner with 'Wipeout' leading off the night, pushing them to third in the demo but they can't seem to find anything to keep people from flipping away once it's over.

The CW (0.3/1, .752 million) has apparently decided to just stay out of the competition altogether and see how many people agree with their decision to renew both 'One Tree Hill' and 'Life Unexpected' by airing them back-to-back.

8PM

The first hour of Fox's 'Hell's Kitchen' (3.0/10, 6.773 million) again took the hour over ABC's 'Wipeout' (2.9/10, 8.764 million) by a tenth of a point in the 18-49 demo. 'Kitchen' was up nearly 10 percent overall and has continued to grow week after week. While 'Wipeout' rose 9 percent in the demo, and 7 percent in total viewers this week, it was still off its mark from two weeks ago, when it beat 'Hell's Kitchen' head-to-head.

CBS had the most viewers with a repeat of 'NCIS' (1.8/6, 10.567 million), while 'Losing It With Jillian' (1.3/4, 3.942 million) dropped slightly. It's down a tenth in the demo and 6 percent in viewers, but still above its mark two weeks ago. The bad news is it came in 15 percent below last summer's 'The Great American Road Trip' in viewers. The CW was on par with a 'One Tree Hill' (0.4/1, .833 million) repeat.

9PM

The second half of 'Hell's Kitchen' (3.3/10, 7.163 million) actually managed to beat the first part of NBC's 'America's Got Talent' (3.1/9, 11.099 million) in head-to-head combat, at least in the demo. With both series up week-to-week, and CBS consistent with a repeat of 'NCIS: LA' (1.5/4, 8.543 million), there wasn't much left for ABC's 'Downfall' (1.3/4, 3.722 million). The reality show is down another 10 percent this week, and has lost approximately 35 percent of its audience over its three week run thus far.

'Life Unexpected'
(0.2/1, .622 million) took a hit for The CW as well, down a tenth in the demo and 30 percent in viewers, but its numbers weren't all that impressive to begin with. Luckily, it's still a cheap show for the network, so it still has some time to grow and find an audience next season.

10PM

Without competition from Fox and Gordon Ramsay, 'America's Got Talent' (3.7/11, 12.309 million) soared in its second hour, more than doubling the viewers from any of its competition. The show was up 18 percent in the demo and 14 percent in total viewers over last week's installment as it expanded to two hours. 'The Good Wife' (1.0/3, 5.34 million) was even in the demo, while off 8 percent in total viewers.

ABC's premiere of 'Primetime: Family Secrets' (1.2/4, 3.781 million) was up 17 percent from last week's 'Primetime: Mind Games,' but actually down slightly from the 'Mind Games' of two weeks ago, indicating people don't seem to be drawn toward or away from these various flavors of 'Primetime' depending on how they're subtitled.

A BIT ABOUT THE NUMBERS

Below is the format we use for showing the ratings data with a quick explanation of each part
Example: 'Show' (Demo/Share, Viewers+SD) [Network-Time]

Show - The name of the show. (R) indicates a repeat. (S) indicates a special presentation. (M) indicates a movie.
Demo - The percentage of adults aged 18-49 tuned to this show. This is the demographic advertisers desire.
Share - The percentage of adults 18-49 households with their televisions on who are turned to this show.
Viewers+SD - The total viewers including both live viewers and DVR viewers who watched the program the same day (generally by 3 AM). DVR penetration has reached about 24 percent of American households
Network - The network the show aired on.
Time - The show's scheduled start time (this can get skewed for sporting events or other live programming).

Nielsen compiles their ratings from randomly selected representative groups of households. Overnight ratings are tabulated by tracking the channels that are on during each time period in those houses. As such, if a live event interrupts or delays the start of a program in certain areas, this data will not reflect those changes. Also, if a local affiliate chooses not to run a network's program at the scheduled time for some reason, this change will also not be represented. Thus, these figures can be skewed and should only be used as a general guideline. We will do our best to alert you when situations that could affect the accuracy of these figures occurs.

Our thanks to TV by the Numbers for their figures and estimates. If you have any questions about the ratings or what it all means, feel free to hit me up in the comments. I'll be here every day for you.
