I Still Love 'Burn Notice,' But ...

by Bob Sassone, posted Jul 8th 2010 6:00PM
Burn NoticeI feel as if I have to put a disclaimer at the start of this article, so here goes:

I LOVE 'BURN NOTICE!'

Now that we have that out of the way, can I say that I'm beginning to fall a little bit out of love with it? It's like a woman that you start dating because she's fun and unpredictable and entertaining and pretty, and you just love the little quirky habit she has of eating Lucky Charms for dinner. But then you realize that she eats Lucky Charms for dinner every single night of the week. And suddenly you don't love it anymore. In fact, you're worried that it might lead to something bad.

That's how I feel about 'Burn Notice' right now.

I've always been a fan of these loner-hero-goes-up-against-the-bad-guys shows, and 'Burn Notice' is one of those them (even if he isn't a "loner" in the strictest definition of the term). But there's a problem embedded in these shows that's really hard to get rid of. You don't want to focus on the big back story -- in this case, who burned Michael, how is he going to get his life back, etc -- then you have to have "case of the week" episodes that have nothing to do with that plot (or very little to do with it).

Sharon GlessSo every week, while Michael is investigating the latest big bad guy who holds the key to his life, he gets dragged into helping some ordinary citizen who owes money to the mob or someone who is dating an abusive thief or someone who needs help getting their kids back. And most of the time it's not a case he wants to get involved in, it's someone that knows Sam or Fiona or his mom, and Michael sighs and gets all frustrated but agrees to help the person even though it's going to cut into time he could be working on his own things.

It's starting to get silly. And the silliness I can handle, but it's also becoming predictable and boring. It's not quite the same thing as what happened on 'The X-Files,' when you sat and wondered why the hell they were bothering to investigate some relatively minor mystery when, you know, they just found out that aliens have a plan to take over the world.

But it's still a situation where you just want them to focus on the burn notice aspect of the show, the spy angle of the show, the Jesse-got-burned aspect of the show instead of the weekly plots where the team helps the little guy. It's always done with style and great cinematography and explosions that go BOOM, but it's getting tedious after three plus seasons.

Here's how I would shake up things on the show.

1. Forget about the title and make him a full-time spy again. Maybe it's time for the whole "burn notice" thing to go away. Completely end that angle and have a big season-ender where Michael gets to be a spy full-time again and goes on regular spy missions (with Sam and Fiona as his freelance help). Wouldn't that be a lot of fun? It would reinvent the show and open up dozens of possible plots.

Hey, if ABC can keep the title 'Cougar Town,' even though that show has gone beyond all that, then USA can do the same with 'Burn Notice.'

2. Get him out of Miami. It's a great location and above I praised the cinematography, but wouldn't it be great to see Michael go on an assignment in New York City or Hawaii or London? When the show started it was logical that he was stuck in Miami, even interesting because we wondered how they would make the show intriguing if they never leave the area. And for a few seasons it was fine. But now it's time to let Michael get on a plane or a train and go some place else.

3. Less case-of-the-week, more big picture. This is always a tricky juggle, because some fans don't want to see the big plot as the main plot every single week. But this show is about something specific (hence the title), and this show should be much more about the spy world than about helping the son of Michael's mom's friend.

Bruce CampbellBesides, half the time Michael doesn't even get paid for his work so I wonder how he affords all that yogurt.

And I'll also add that when 'Burn Notice' ends, I'd love to see Bruce Campbell with his own show. I'd watch 'Sam Axe.' Just don't call it 'Axe' because that will just make people think of lame cologne.

What do you think -- is 'Burn Notice' burning out?

LOL! How funny I just read and agreed with an artical that said the exact opposite! I'm sick to death of the burn notice!! I love love the whole frelance team that 'the gang' is. I'm sick of Michael running off to try and get back on the job.
I want more character developement around the relationships that he has used and abused while on the job. (Sam Fi, Nate, Maddie ect.) He uses the job to run away from his life but he sure doesn't seem to hate his life or his 'family'! I would love some out of Miami cases.. I mean lets be realistic the crime/murder/explosion rates would not have gone unnoticed or unaddress for SO long. But I'm sick of the Burn Notice! WHO CARES! Him getting back in would mean him leaving! But I guess that's why they still have both story lines, because public opinion seems split between the two! Great read. Loved the comparision to Xfiles and dumb cases!

We left it long ago. Sooooo bland after season 1. Season 1 he had cool spy tips and tricks. Season 1 he was struggling and under the radar. By the middle of season 2 it had turned completely into a comfortable hat for the characters. All threat and malic had left the show. Even worse, the clever tricks were gone. He no longer had tips. He wasn't genius on his feet, using crazy skills to beat punks. He was just another lame do-gooder PI. Gag.

i'm definitely not falling out of love with B/N, but there are some really good suggestions here... Michael getting un-burned doesn't make sense to me - as a full-time spy for the US, he'd likely be all over the world under deep cover and for great lengths of time - no room for Sam, Fiona and Maddy (who I love, btw)...it would take some focus from the show... BUT, I do love the idea of our happy trio taking out-of-town cases, and Michael's potentially growing visibility is a good catalyst for that...

another good catalyst for Mike & Co to start moving around is Jesse - let him figure out that Mike got him burned and turn him into an enemy (at least temporarily)... this would create more impetus for geographical movement, and also restore balance to the show... I really like Jesse, and I've gone back and forth on this, but I do think the addition of Jesse alters the balance in a negative way... with him constantly going rogue, and not having any consequences, he kinda makes Mike look like a chump, and B/N sinks or swims on how cool its leading man is...

i do like the weekly stories... along with the explosions and the wonderful chemistry among the cast, my favorite aspect of the show is watching Michael slip in and out of assumed identities... why every criminal in Miami doesn't have his photo on the wall is not exactly off the wall... first off, Miami is a very big city, and I doubt the embezzling CPA's are palling around with the gangbangers or the international arms dealers... second, many of the weekly criminals are foreign bad guys - they come to Miami for a particular deal, then leave, die, or go to jail, so they're not around to out Mike & Co.... and finally, those weekly bad guys don't always find out who ended their illustrious careers...

to incorporatr the big picture (Michael's burn notice) into the weekly capers, i wish they would follow the x-files model, and occasionally devote entire episodes to that storyline... and for those of you who asked why mulder and scully would solve weekly mysteries when they were trying to get to the aliens who want to take over the planet - well, 'cause, it's like, their job?

more gratuitous nudity from Fi would help too.

I still think the show is on the mark...Except for the character, Jesse...It seems forced and very contrived.

First off, the Jesse thing just does not work. The three of them are quirky and off beat and bringing this guy into the mix was stupid from the get go. I love the show and will keep watching, but I really don't like the format as it is with the Jesse addition. Luckily, they moved it to 8 CST so it isn't on so late for someone who has to get up at 5 am.

YOU should be writing for that show!!! I agree with you, it is starting to become very predictable. I also agree that is time for a change and to make him a spy again, traveling to different exotic places with his two cohorts...

It's just a show. I find entertaining. Not CSI or Law and order. I think the characters work well together. I love Sharon Gless'part.
