Ratings Race: 'Dance' Climbs, But Not Enough to Dethrone 'Talent'
by Jason Hughes, posted Jul 8th 2010 4:50PM
Even with the power of 'America's Got Talent' reduced to a single hour, NBC (2.4/8, 8.153 million) still managed to take the night in both total viewers and the 18-49 demo. In a competitive second place, down only a tenth in the demo, Fox (2.3/8, 6.319 million) saw improvements on their two-hour performance show of 'So You Think You Can Dance.'Despite the strength of ABC's (1.1/3, 4.182 million) comedy lineup, and the improvements they've seen with 'Castle' at 10PM, CBS (1.4/4, 5.701 million) still came in ahead of them. Never underestimate the power of CBS's procedural franchises.
'America's Next Top Model' continues proving itself for The CW, outperforming most of their scripted shows in this season of summer repeats. Unless they change their target demographic, there's no reason Tyra Banks can't keep riding this series to the bank for many more seasons.
8PM
Fox took the hour with a new 'So You Think You Can Dance' (2.3/8, 6.314 million). The reality competition rebounded slightly from last week's low, up a tenth in the 18-49 demo and nearly 8 percent in total viewers. Could the fact that Fox is now streaming full episodes online continue a growth pattern?
Right in the mix of things was NBC, with the summer premiere of 'Minute to Win It' (2.1/8, 6.947 million), as 'America's Got Talent' was pared down to just one hour. The episode was on par with its last airing back in May.
ABC edged out CBS in total viewers in a comedy showdown with back-to-back repeats of 'The Middle' (1.1/4, 4.427 million & 1.1/4, 4.453 million). The episodes scored their highest total viewers in a month, up approximately 10 percent from last week. CBS went with back-to-back repeats of 'How I Met Your Mother' (1.2/4, 3.778 million & 1.1/4, 3.811 million). The CW stuck with reruns of 'America's Next Top Model' (0.6/2, 1.376 million).
9PM
Despite dropping nearly 8 percent in total viewers from last week, 'America's Got Talent' (3.4/10, 11.779 million) was strong enough to win the hour and the night for NBC. Taking advantage was the second hour of Fox's 'So You Think You Can Dance' (2.4/8, 6.324 million).
CBS beat FOX in total viewers with a repeat of 'Criminal Minds' (1.5/5, 6.555 million), while Emmy-favorite 'Modern Family' (1.4/4, 4.523 million) continued to be the high point for ABC on Wednesdays, with 'Cougar Town' (1.0/3, 3.015 million) at the low end.
The CW can at least be happy with the fact that 'America's Next Top Model' (0.5/1, 1.141 million) stayed above a million viewers throughout the night.
10PM
NBC and CBS split the hour, with 'Law & Order: SVU' (1.9/6, 5.732 million) down a tenth in the demo from last week, but still taking the crown from 'CSI: NY' (1.5/5, 6.753 million). The latter claimed the total viewers title for the hour.
'Castle' (1.0/3, 4.336 million) was a distant third for ABC. The good news is the time period was up again for The Alphabet, improving 30 percent in the demo, and nearly 27 percent in total viewers from last week, when 'Castle' took over the slot. ABC has grown the hour in both the demo and total viewers since the final installment of 'Happy Town' back on June 17, 2010.

A BIT ABOUT THE NUMBERS
Below is the format we use for showing the ratings data with a quick explanation of each part
Example: 'Show' (Demo/Share, Viewers+SD) [Network-Time]
Show - The name of the show. (R) indicates a repeat. (S) indicates a special presentation. (M) indicates a movie.
Demo - The percentage of adults aged 18-49 tuned to this show. This is the demographic advertisers desire.
Share - The percentage of adults 18-49 households with their televisions on who are turned to this show.
Viewers+SD - The total viewers including both live viewers and DVR viewers who watched the program the same day (generally by 3 AM). DVR penetration has reached about 24 percent of American households
Network - The network the show aired on.
Time - The show's scheduled start time (this can get skewed for sporting events or other live programming).
Nielsen compiles their ratings from randomly selected representative groups of households. Overnight ratings are tabulated by tracking the channels that are on during each time period in those houses. As such, if a live event interrupts or delays the start of a program in certain areas, this data will not reflect those changes. Also, if a local affiliate chooses not to run a network's program at the scheduled time for some reason, this change will also not be represented. Thus, these figures can be skewed and should only be used as a general guideline. We will do our best to alert you when situations that could affect the accuracy of these figures occurs.
Our thanks to TV by the Numbers for their figures and estimates. If you have any questions about the ratings or what it all means, feel free to hit me up in the comments. I'll be here every day for you.
