Ratings Race: 'Big Brother' Returns Strong, Takes Down 'Wipeout'

CBS's summer guilty pleasure 'Big Brother' premiered its new season with such a punch last night (1.8/6, 7.577 million) that it knocked ABC's (1.7/5, 6.417 million) entire lineup down, according to overnight ratings reports. Fox (1.7/5, 4.919 million) stayed competitive toward the top with 'So You Think You Can Dance' stopping its downward slide of the past several weeks.NBC (0.9/3, 2.237 million) spotlighted the Emmy-snubbed 'Community' by re-airing the season's six most popular episodes, and maintained their most consistent numbers of the summer season, though not their highest. The CW (0.5/2, 1.374 million) stuck with vampires, continuing to find a steady audience for the former CBS series 'Moonlight,' as a companion to their own popular 'The Vampire Diaries.'
Maybe it's time The CW started incorporating fangs into all their programming. Imagine the ratings for 'America's Next Top Vampire.'
8PM
After relying on repeats of 'The Mentalist' to compete with ABC, CBS was finally ready to play with the season premiere of 'Big Brother' (2.5/9, 7.347 million), up a tenth of a point in the demo from last summer's bow. ABC managed to barely hang onto the lead in total viewers with 'Wipeout' (2.4/9, 7.858 million), but the reality hit took a big hit, down 14 percent in the demo and 9 percent in viewers.
Fox was steady with a repeat of 'Glee' (1.3/4, 3.879 million), while NBC kicked off a night of the six most popular 'Community' (0.8/3, 2.641 million & 0.7/2, 2.068 million) episodes from the season. Unfortunately, it looks like they stuck around the average the Peacock has been getting for 'Community' repeats all summer, which is generally the lowest-rated of their Thursday comedies. The CW stuck with their vampire lineup, starting with 'The Vampire Diaries' (0.6/2, 1.518 million).
9PM
'So You Think You Can Dance' (2.1/6, 5.959 million) was even with last week for Fox, while 'Rookie Blue' (1.6/5, 6.383 million) continued a bad trend for ABC on the night, slipping 16 percent in the demo, and 7 percent in viewers. CBS took the viewers crown for the hour with a repeat of 'CSI: Crime Scene Investigation' (1.4/4, 6.825 million).
NBC had another pair of 'Community' (0.9/3, 2.155 million & 1.0/3, 2.309 million) repeats, while 'Moonlight' (0.5/2, 1.23 million) was even for The CW.
10PM
'The Mentalist' (1.6/5, 8.56 million) reclaimed the viewers title for the night from ABC's 'Wipeout' (2.4/9, 7.858 million). The Alphabet's down night wrapped with a new 'Boston Med' (1.2/4, 5.011 million) sliding 14 percent in the demo and 7 percent in viewers.
NBC wrapped their night with their last two 'Community' (1.1/3, 2.229 million & 0.9/3, 2.019 million) repeats. If the network was hoping this would help grow the audience for the show's upcoming second season, it's hard to say if it worked. Some half-hours improved over episodes of 'Parks & Recreation' in recent weeks, but the consistency throughout the night at least says that the people who did tune in stuck with it.

A BIT ABOUT THE NUMBERS
Below is the format we use for showing the ratings data with a quick explanation of each part
Example: 'Show' (Demo/Share, Viewers+SD) [Network-Time]
Show - The name of the show. (R) indicates a repeat. (S) indicates a special presentation. (M) indicates a movie.
Demo - The percentage of adults aged 18-49 tuned to this show. This is the demographic advertisers desire.
Share - The percentage of adults 18-49 households with their televisions on who are turned to this show.
Viewers+SD - The total viewers including both live viewers and DVR viewers who watched the program the same day (generally by 3 AM). DVR penetration has reached about 24 percent of American households
Network - The network the show aired on.
Time - The show's scheduled start time (this can get skewed for sporting events or other live programming).
Nielsen compiles their ratings from randomly selected representative groups of households. Overnight ratings are tabulated by tracking the channels that are on during each time period in those houses. As such, if a live event interrupts or delays the start of a program in certain areas, this data will not reflect those changes. Also, if a local affiliate chooses not to run a network's program at the scheduled time for some reason, this change will also not be represented. Thus, these figures can be skewed and should only be used as a general guideline. We will do our best to alert you when situations that could affect the accuracy of these figures occurs.
Our thanks to TV by the Numbers for their figures and estimates. If you have any questions about the ratings or what it all means, feel free to hit me up in the comments. I'll be here every day for you.
