ABC Soaps Launch 'What If' Web Series

susan_lucci_all_my_children_abcHave you ever longed to see a mash-up of your favorite soap characters? ABC Daytime has heard your wish and made it come true.

The network has taken stars from all three of its daytime dramas -- 'All My Children,' 'General Hospital' and 'One Life to Live' -- and put them to work in original webisodes that allow them to play their characters crossing over into an alternate reality where they can interact with characters from other shows.

That means Llanview and Port Charles and Pine Valley citizens can all exist in the same world and cross paths. 'AMC's' Erica Kane (Susan Lucci) can have a run in with 'GH's' Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard), for instance, while 'OLTL's' Todd Manning (Trevor St. John) meets nerdy computer genius Damian Spinelli (Bradford Anderson) from 'GH.' And gorgeous 'AMC' hunk Ryan Lavery (Cameron Mathison) flirts shamelessly with 'GH's' Carly Jacks (Laura Wright).

That's actually the line-up for the first set of 'What If' webisodes that debut on Monday, July 12, on abc.com and soapnet.com. It's the beginning of a ten-part series that will present the stars of ABC Daytime in character as you've never seen them before. Here's a preview of the webisodes:

Just to be clear, these are stand-alone segments, completely separate from the current storylines on the shows. So while Erica and Sonny share some time together, don't expect him to ask her about Cortlandt Electronics or for her to recognize him as a suspect in the Johnny Zacchara car bombing.

The webisodes were all directed by 'One Life to Live's' executive producer, Frank Valentini. I'm hoping the series does really well, because I'd like to see more in the future. Here's the schedule for the weeks ahead:

-- Week 2, July 19 'AMC's' Greenlee Smythe (Rebecca Budig) and 'GH's' Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) have an encounter. She's drunk, he's stone-cold sober.

-- Week 3, July 26 'OLTL's' Starr Manning (Kristen Alderson) reminds 'AMC's' Angie (Debbi Morgan) and Jesse (Darnell Williams) how lucky they are to have each other.

-- Week 4, August 2 'OLTL's' Tess (Bree Williamson) makes a move on 'GH' cop Dante Falconeri (Dominic Zamprogna), after realizing she knows him.

-- Week 5, August 9 Affairs of the heart, and their history of heart problems, bond 'GH's' Luke Spencer (Anthony Geary) and "OLTL's' Viki Banks (Erika Slezak).

-- Week 6, August 16 'OLTL's' Rex Balsom (John- Paul Lavoisier) gets into a debate about love with 'GH's' Maxie Jones (Kirsten Storms).

-- Week 7, August 23
After comparing notes on their messy love lives, 'OLTL's' Blair Cramer (Kassie DePaiva) and 'AMC's' Tad Martin (Michael E. Knight) realize they dance to the same tune.

-- Week 8, August 30
When they get trapped in an elevator in a burning building, 'GH's' Sam McCall (Kelly Monaco) and 'OLTL's' John McBain (Michael Easton) get to know each other very well.

This sounds so cool! If Soapnet had tried interesting stuff like this, they wouldn't be facing cancellation - how come these great ideas always come along too darn late?
