'Northern Exposure' Cast: Where Are They Now?

by Allison Waldman, posted Jul 12th 2010 9:00AM
Northern Exposure CastThe summer has traditionally been a time when television reverts to reruns and an occasional fill-in series that rarely runs beyond Labor Day. In 1990, however, CBS premiered a new comedy-drama show that was definitely not the run-of-the-mill summertime fare. In fact, 'Northern Exposure' was a pioneer in many ways, ushering in the era of dramedy -- the blend of drama and comedy -- that is so popular today.

From the moment it debuted on July 12, 1990, until it ended its run on July 26, 1995, 'Northern Exposure' was something special, and a large part of that success was due to the cast. The show was a launching pad for some of the younger actors, and a showcase for many others. On the anniversary of the show's premiere, we decided to catch up with the cast.

The Stars of Northern Exposure: Then and Now

Rob Morrow

Then:
For Rob Morrow, 'Northern Exposure' was a blessing and curse. The former little known actor wasn't thrilled to be on a hit show and chaffed at the commitment to a long series run. His character, Joel Fleischman was a fish-out-of-water New York doctor stuck in Cicely, Alaska, until he worked off his college debt. Morrow was written out of 'Northern Exposure' in season 5.

Now:
Years later, Morrow was happy to be back in a CBS drama, 'Numb3rs,' which ended in March 2010. This fall, he will be starring in ABC's new legal series 'The Whole Truth.' On film, he appeared in 'Quiz Show' and 'The Bucket List.'

Janine Turner

Then:
Prior to 'Northern Exposure,' Janine had done some modeling, some TV and even a small role on 'General Hospital.' She made her breakthrough on the show as bush pilot Maggie O'Connell, who had a love-hate relationship with Morrow's character.

Now:
Since the show ended, she's done a few series, including 'Strong Medicine' and 'Friday Night Lights.' On screen, she was June Cleaver in 'Leave It to Beaver, and one of the ladies in 'Dr. T and the Women.' For a short time, Janine was also the spokesperson for the medication, restatsis.

John Corbett

Then:
As ex-con-turned-DJ Chris Stevens, aka the voice of Cicely, John Corbett made a name for himself after appearing in the second episode -- and most every show after that.

He was also Nia Vardalos' love in 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding.' Corbett also had sci-fi show, 'The Vistor,' a dramedy, 'Lucky,' and he has just wrapped the second season of the award-winning comedy, 'The United States of Tara.'

Adam Arkin

Then:

I lived in Alaska from 1959 to 1972. Back in those days almost everyone was quirky just like the characters on Northern Exposure. It was q great show that captured the tone of the Alaska of old (before the oil folks moved in).

Is it my imagination or does Adam Arkin look like George Clooney's younger twin brother?

Cute show that had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING right about Alaska. We in Alaska would cringe every time they spoke about driving to Juneau, (impossible) the viney maple and douglas fir in the background showed it was in the Northwest, the Natives acted totally wrong, the lone moose was way too small or the hot chick married to the guy who owned the bar never got hit on by young dudes in the parking lot. Northern Exposure was one of the great phoney "Alaska" shows that are hopefully dying off forever now that reality shows about our state (one fifth of the entire United States!) are popping up.
