TV Fans Are in 'Luck': HBO Picks Up Dustin Hoffman Horse-Racing Drama

Dustin HoffmanHBO officially announced what has been in the works for months, that it has picked up a new drama called 'Luck.' The pilot was directed by Michael Mann and stars Dustin Hoffman. It begins shooting in the fall at Santa Anita Park and around Los Angeles.

The show will center around the horse racing industry, looking at owners, jockeys, gamblers and other figures related to the industry.
The announcement was made today by HBO president Michael Lombardo, who gave credit to Mann ('Miami Vice,' 'Public Enemies') and writer David Milch ('Deadwood').

"Michael Mann delivered a pilot from David Milch's brilliant script that took our breath away," he said in the press lease. "We are truly excited that these two artists, and our extraordinary cast headed by Dustin Hoffman, will be bringing LUCK to life."

The pilot was shot mostly Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, CA this past spring, and it appears that filming will take place regularly there. Pete Siberell, director of special project at the park, told the Pasadena Star-News that HBO officials had spoken with him about how to make an ongoing project work there.

Rounding out the cast of 'Luck': Dennis Farina, John Ortiz, Kevin Dunn, Richard Kind, Jason Gedrick, Ritchie Coster, Ian Hart, Tom Payne, Kerry Condon, Gary Stevens and Nick Nolte. Jill Hennessy guest stars, according to the release.
