On the Scene: 'America's Got Talent' First 12 Acts

by Michael Maloney, posted Jul 14th 2010 7:00PM
A singer with Justin Bieber hair, a "hand whistler," two singing sisters, a man who juggled fire and a woman who made art while under water were among the first 12 finalists on 'America's Got Talent' last night.

TV Squad was on the scene and spoke to host Nick Cannon and judges Piers Morgan, Sharon Osbourne and Howie Mandel after the show's live broadcast. Cannon and the trio of judges weighed in on the diverse acts, the judges chemistry and admit that they're stumped over what RNG stands for? (FYI: Rumble New Generation.)

Which four acts will make it to the next round? Tune in tonight at 9PM ET to find out!

Nick Cannon
Did you get to rehearse with that fire extinguisher that you used to put out fire juggling Nick Pike?
(Laughs). Yes. They showed me how to use it.

Which acts stood out for you?
I have to say Future Funk and Fighting Gravity.

Are you glad you don't have to weigh in on what you think about the acts?
Absolutely. I wouldn't be a good judge. I'd tell everyone that they're great. That's my job.

Howie Mandel

You told Nathaniel Kenyon that Justin Bieber wanted his hair back and he told you Mr. Clean does, too. Isn't he too young to know who Mr. Clean is?
There are still Mr. Clean ads on TV. There are. Apparently, you don't watch TV, Mr. AOL!

The mask -- to protect yourself from Nathaniel's germs -- was a cute sight gag; how quickly did that come to you?

Somebody told me he was sick. I said, 'Go get me a mask.'

Were you close to giving an 'X' tonight?
Never. Not tonight. I embrace everything for what it is. I love the variety in this show and in the essence of what people do.

Is 'hand whistler' Sally Cohn the next Susan Boyle?
No. Susan Boyle was a surprise and was mainstream. Sally's not mainstream. She's not going to have the number one selling album in the world, but I think that there's a place for her. She was just as entertaining speaking as she was whistling.

What shelf life does Future Funk have? They're 10 and 5 years old!
I don't know. I'm only here to deal with the now. Right now, they're the two cutest people. You just want to squeeze them. I don't know if they'll be that cute at 41. I have to say I'm also very entertained by Airpocalypse.

The five girls who danced are called RNG. What does that mean?
I have no idea. Maybe it's the dance studio they came from?

Sharon Osbourne

You said to Kung Fu Heroes, 'When you come back...' That was encouraging to them in a subtle way.
You know why that is? It takes so much guts to do what they do. To have the guts to get up there in front of America...sometimes they can't deliver their best because of their nerves.

Why was Maricar's water art well-received and Nike Pike's fire act was not?
I think we've seen the elements in the fire act before. But I've never seen a woman in a rubber suit in a water tank painting before. She practiced in her bathtub at home!

What's the secret to the chemistry among the judges?
You know it just works. It just works! It either does or it doesn't and in our case we're very lucky it works. Individually, we're all different people.

Did you get close to hitting the 'X?'
No. They would have had to have been really awful for me to have done that.

Do you know what RNG stands for?
No. I don't.

You, Piers, Howie and Nick are being asked to weigh in on everything from Mel Gibson to the oil disaster. Why is that?
People want to know the thoughts of people in the public eye. It fascinates me as to why people think I give a hoot about Mel Gibson because I'm sure he doesn't give a hoot about what I think about him. It's very interesting, isn't it?

Piers Morgan
Why didn't Nick Pike's fire act work?

He was trying to make us think he was more exciting and dangerous than he was. He was doing very simple juggling and basic acrobatics and using fire to make it look more dramatic. It doesn't really work on a show like this.

It looked like his hat was really on fire.
The fire was just a prop, overdone, all a bit muddled.

You were the only judge to give an 'X' tonight. Why?
A few of us came close. If an act really goes nowhere we'll "X" it.

The young girls who danced are called 'RNG'; what does that stand for?
I've got no idea either now that you mention it. They're quite good though.

What kind of shelf life does Future Funk have? They're 10 and 5 years old.
Who knows? But America loves them. They're both full of confidence.

Is Sally Cohn America's Susan Boyle?
Sally Cohn is America's Sally Cohn. She's a great whistler and a great character. I love having her on the show.

The show's taken off in the ratings. Why do you think that is?
I think America loves that anyone can be any age on this show.

Why do you, Sharon and Howie work so well together?
We drive each other completely bonkers. We're all completely different characters.

If Sharon and Howie are harsh on a performer and you weigh in last are you ever tempted to go easy with your comments?
(Pause.) Not really. (Laughs) They probably are. I'm not. Sharon's the mother hen.
