The crew on 'Rescue Me' (Tue., 10PM ET on FX) had a present (of sorts) for Tommy to celebrate his return. But any happy vibes were quickly overshadowed by shocking sadness.

After the firefighters responded to 35 calls in one shift, Chief 'Needles' Nelson told them how proud he was, and continued the celebration with a little something "for you, Gavin," he said. "From us -- it's a welcome-back gift."

Tommy gingerly opened the bag, convinced there was some sort of explosive practical joke inside. No, just a kevlar vest.

But something wasn't right with Lou. The crew dropped their pizza slices and rushed into the garage to find him sprawled out on the floor, a haunting image. What's going to happen to Tommy's best friend?
