Whoopi Addresses Mel Gibson Backlash (VIDEO)

by Donald Deane, posted Jul 14th 2010 1:00PM
On 'The View' (weekdays, syndicated), Whoopi Goldberg defends comments she made that Mel Gibson is not a racist, despite his use of the N-word during a rant against estranged girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva.

"Being a black woman, you'd think you would give me a little bit of leeway to have some feel if I was around a racist. But, okay. I understand ... You don't get it," Goldberg said, pointing out that, while she did argue that Gibson is not racist, she didn't condone his behavior.

Then, Goldberg lashes out at people who called her office and harassed an assistant working there, likening their treatment of her to Gibson's alleged verbal abuse of Grigorieva.

Finally, Goldberg admits that she too has used racial slurs in the past. "I want to confess to you guys ... I myself am a racist ... If you cut me off while I'm driving, and I happen to look over, whatever I see, that's what you are," she said, adding that if anyone can admit they've never used racial epithets during times of stress, then "you get the right to cast the first stone."
